  • Design, performance, and durability of Magdalenian hunting weapons

  • No evidence of bowhunting in Magdalenian antler points

Open Access•Jean-Marc Pétillon, Eugénie Gauvrit Roux•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•References: 28

Dimensions and mass of Magdalenian antler points do not support bow use. • Small antler points can be hafted to long and heavy projectile shafts. • Hypothesizing about weapon system requires contextual and traceological evidence. In the study of prehistoric projectile points, the tip cross-sectional area method (TCSA) is often used to hypothesize about projectile delivery mode. In a recent article, Langley and Lombard applied this method, combine…

  • An insight into Late Glacial fire-making toolkits

    Open Access•Eugénie Gauvrit Roux, Pierre‐antoine Beauvais et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025•References: 5

While evidence of the daily use of fire during the Paleolithic is abundantly represented by hearth features, charcoals, or burnt faunal and lithic remains, west European fire-making tools are widely unknown. Specific traditions, however, yield quite often chert strike-a-light tools, and allow a glimpse into a very long technical history: these include the Mousterian of Acheulian Tradition in southwestern France and the Late Glacial in northern Eu…

  • Newly Discovered Remains of a Late Upper Paleolithic Dwelling in the Northern Baikal Area

    A V Tetenkin, A Henry et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024

  • Combining experiment and ethnoarchaeology to differentiate the surface conditions of animal hides

Open Access•Sylvie Beyrie, Cristina De Stefanis et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2024•References: 8

There is a wide range of technical processes involved in working animal skins, depending on the environment, the size of the skins and the purpose of the work (clothing, tent covers, etc.). The archaeological tools and their shape, weight, and use-wear are often the only evidence of these technical processes. Their understanding requires an experimental approach combined with ethnoarchaeological data to establish protocols allowing processes comp…

The pressure knapping technique develops circa 25,000 cal BP in Northeast Asia and excels at producing highly standardized microblades. Microblade pressure knapping spreads throughout most of Northeast Asia up to the Russian Arctic, and Alaska, in areas where the human presence was unknown. Swan Point CZ4b is the earliest uncontested evidence of human occupation of Alaska, at around 14,000 cal BP. It yields a pressure microblade component produce…

Open Access•Elise Cormareche, Aurélie Ajas et al.•ARTICLE•Paléo•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 16

    Open Access•A V Tetenkin, E I Demonterova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 1

This paper deals with numerous ocher remains found in cultural layers 6, 2G, and 2B of the Paleolithic site Kovrizhka IV on the Vitim River, in the Baikal-Patom Highlands (Eastern Siberia). These layers are dated by radiocarbon to the interval of ~19.2–18.3 ka cal BP. In cultural layers 2B and 2G, ocher colored the living fl oors and combustion areas. Stratigraphic observations indicate that this was done at the very beginning of the occupation. …
