A GIS Analysis of Intra-Site Spatial Patterning at the Early Paleoindian Mt. Albion West Site (AhGw-131)
The Mt. Albion West (AhGw-131) Early Paleoindian site is one of only a handful of Late Pleistocene sites in Ontario. Excavated by Archaeological Services Inc. (ASI) between 1998 and 2004, the site is situated adjacent to the Red Hill valley on the Niagara Escarpment in Hamilton, Ontario. The project yielded detailed analyses concerning the tools and debitage recovered from the four discrete artifact concentration areas at this site in addition to…
The embodied performance and affective presence of Iroquoian animal effigy pipes
In this paper, I explore notions of performance and presence as ways to characterize Iroquoian animal effigy pipes beyond the purview of representational thought. In crafting such devices, enhancing them with animal parts, and establishing corporeal connections with animal ondaki through the act of smoking, it is argued that animal others were effectively re-represented or revealed to pipe smokers. Through an analysis of animal effigy pipes house…
Counter-monuments and the Perdurance of Place
In this paper, I critically examine contemporary commemorative forms and practices known as ‘counter-monuments’ from an archaeological standpoint, in the process interrogating the conceptual underpinnings of the monument taxon as it is currently understood. Drawing on Tim Ingold's notion of perdurance, and through an exploration of counter-monumental concerns with form, siting and proxemics, I argue that memorialization can be seen as relationall…
Recent Investigations at the Cedar Creek Earthworks (AaHq-2), Essex County, Ontario
This paper presents and contextualizes the results of recent research at the Cedar Creek Earthworks (AaHq-2) in Essex County, Ontario, one of the few remaining Late Prehistoric earthen enclosures in the western Lake Erie region. First documented in the 1930s, the site consists of a unique semicircular berm and ditch feature to which has been appended three earthen projections or “nodes.” Despite a combination of remote sensing, testpitting, and t…
Childhood Diet and Western Basin Tradition Foodways at the Krieger Site, Southwestern Ontario, Canada
In this article, we discuss new stable isotope data obtained from human dental tissue at the Krieger site, a Late Woodland Western Basin Tradition occupation from southwestern Ontario, Canada. These data point to significant maize consumption within an otherwise diffuse subsistence economy and settlement pattern geared toward the occupation of short-term campsites. The degree of maize consumption at Krieger implies the necessity for storage and y…
