  • Radiocarbon Dates for the Stelzer Site, 39DW242, Dewey County, South Dakota

    Thomas W Haberman, Marion Travis•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1995

Two uncorrected radiocarbon dates, AD 150 and AD 290, conform nicely with previously published estimated dates for this well-known Plains Woodland occupation site along the Missouri River in north central South Dakota. Data related to the field collection of the dated materials are presented

  • The Randall Phase Component at the Dirt Lodge Village Site9 Spink County, South Dakota: Late Woodland/Early Plains Village Transitions on the Northeastern Plains

    Thomas W Haberman•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1993•References: 5

The Randall phase dates to about AD 1150 and represents a regional Late Woodland cultural expression in the southern portion of the Northeastern Plains. It shows similarities to Great Oasis and Initial Middle Missouri variant sites of the Plains Village tradition. Data from the late Plains Woodland component at the Dirt Lodge Village site (39SP 11) are used to define Randall phase. The Rose Hill Village site (39HD4), the WolfCreek Mounds site (39…

  • Evidence for Aboriginal Tobaccos in Eastern North America

    Open Access•Thomas W Haberman•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1984•Cited by: 4•References: 29

SEM micrographs of seeds from four tobaccos historically cultivated by aboriginal groups in the Eastern Woodlands and adjacent Great Plains of North America are presented. The tobaccos considered are Nicotiana rustica L., N. attenuata Torr., N. bigelovii var. quadrivalvis (Pursh) East, and N. bigelovii var. multivalvis (Lindley) East. Micrographs of seeds from herbarium collections are compared with micrographs of carbonized tobacco seeds from th…

  • Sampling Methods, Functional Associations, and Galton's Problem: A Replicative Assessament 1

    Open Access•James M Schaefer, Michel Antoine et al.•ARTICLE•Behavior Science Notes•1971•Cited by: 6•References: 15

Sixteen independent tests of the relationship between technological adap tation and settlement patterns provided material for testing sample methods and the interdependence of cases or Galton's problem. Our hypothesis that societies dependent upon agriculture tend to have fixed settlement patterns was strongly confirmed. Linked pair tests for Galton's problem indicated that sample neighbor scores were frequently similar, and we con cluded that th…
