  • Archaeomagnetic record from Modoc Rock Shelter, Illinois, for the time range of 6200–8900 B.P

    Open Access•William F Kean, W Kean et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1997

The Modoc Rock Shelter is located in Randolph County, Illinois at the base of the Mississippi River bluffs, and is documented as having human occupation from 9000 B.P. to as recently as 800 B.P. Two hundred twenty-eight archaeomagnetic samples were collected from 28 surface hearths in two different excavation areas. Pilot samples from each hearth were A.F. demagnetized to 100 mT to establish the optimum demagnetization level for all samples from …

  • Stratigraphy and Radiocarbon Chronology of Modoc Rock Shelter, Illinois

    Open Access•Steven R Ahler•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1993•Cited by: 7•References: 6

Excavations at Modoc Rock Shelter, Illinois (11R5), between 1952 and 1956 documented the antiquity and cultural sequence of the Archaic period in the midcontinental United States. Some researchers questioned the site's stratigraphic integrity because of apparent inconsistencies between the radiocarbon assays and associated artifacts. Excavations in 1980, 1984, and 1987 documented stratigraphic sequences and produced assays of over 40 additional r…
