  • Assessing the Potential of Latent Class Modelling for Classifying Stone Artefacts and the Quantification of Technological Diversity

Open Access•L Timbrell, M La Grove et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2026

Archaeological typologies are used to determine the number and diversity of artefact forms within a prehistoric toolkit. However, objective classification is challenging, complicating cross-assemblage comparisons. We explore the potential of latent class modelling (LCM) for grouping stone tools based on their morphological and technological attributes. LCM identifies unobserved (‘latent’) subgroups that share certain observed characteristics, pro…

  • Recent progress in studies of the last million years of human physical and behavioural evolution

Open Access•James Cole, James id_orcid Cole et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2026

This article presents a synthesis of recent developments in the study of human evolution over the past five years. It begins with an overview of hominin species nomenclature and diversity, followed by an examination of the proposed population bottleneck ∼900,000 years ago. The discussion then turns to the ongoing debate regarding the Last Common Ancestor (LCA) of Homo sapiens , Neanderthals, and Denisovans, contextualized within patterns of homin…

  • Uniformity and Diversity in Handaxe Shape at the End of the Acheulean in Southwest Asia

    Open Access•Ceri Shipton, H S Groucutt et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2023•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 37

This study examines parameters, causes, and spatio-temporal patterns of handaxe shape variation from Tabun cave in the Levant, and Khall Amayshan 4B and Khabb Musayyib in northern Arabia. These assemblages span the range of most pointy to most rounded handaxes found anywhere during the Acheulean. The AGMT3D program is used to conduct high resolution geometric morphometric analysis of handaxe form from 3D models. Shape variation is tested against …

  • Replicability in Lithic Analysis

    Open Access•J Pargeter, Alison S Brooks et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2023•Citada por: 28•Referencias: 42

The ubiquity and durability of lithic artifacts inform archaeologists about important dimensions of human behavioral variability. Despite their importance, lithic artifacts can be problematic to study because lithic analysts differ widely in their theoretical approaches and the data they collect. The extent to which differences in lithic data relate to prehistoric behavioral variability or differences between archaeologists today remains incomple…

  • The Stone Age Archaeology of West Africa

    Eleanor M L Scerri, Eleanor Scerri•CHAPTER•Oxford Research Encyclopedia of…•2017•Citada por: 2

In the early 21st century, understanding West Africa’s Stone Age past has increasingly transcended its colonial legacy to become central to research on human origins. Part of this process has included shedding the methodologies and nomenclatures of narrative approaches to focus on more quantified, scientific descriptions of artifact variability and context. Together with a growing number of chronometric age estimates and environmental information…
