From Intervention to Retrenchment
The willingness of successive Polish governments to support and participate in US-led multilateral military interventions—such as the 2003 invasion of Iraq—has been explained in terms of Poland's prevailing strategic culture. Yet in 2011 Poland opted to exclude itself from participating in the NATO campaign against Libya. It is argued that this was not a counter-cultural decision, but was instead a case of one strategic subculture supplanting ano…

Reopening the Wounds of History? The Foreign Policy of the ‘Fourth’ Polish Republic
The 2005 parliamentary and presidential elections in Poland led to Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Law and Justice) coming to power. In the handling of its relations with the EU, Germany, Russia and the United States, the government broadly continued the same policies as its predecessors. However, there was a marked change in style, and the nationalistic overtones of the rhetoric emanating from Warsaw became increasingly pronounced. This was partly a con…
Redeeming Time
Beginning from the observation of Winnicott's well-attested predilection for Eliot's Four Quartets as an expressive vehicle for his own thoughts and concerns about dying as a fact of, and a factor in, the life of the individual, this paper examines the extent of Winnicott's explicit and implicit "borrowings" from this poem in his theoretical and clinical writings over the last two decades of his life. The author considers the reasons why Winnicot…

Germs: A Memoir of Childhood. Richard Wollheim. London: Transworld Publishers, 2005. 309 pp. $24.50 ($19.95 pb). Describing the protracted gestation of this book, Richard Wollheim says that the desire to write it had long been in his thoughts "like a benign lump" that in his twilight years "now seemed to be growing" (124). The result is a truly exceptional work, an account of childhood that is at once distinctive and distinguished. Those familiar…

The Politics of Restitution
This article analyzes Harold Wilson's policy towards the Republic of Ireland during the first eighteen months of his government. This article will demonstrate that the Labour government embarked upon a concerted effort to improve Anglo-Irish relations. In particular, the Labour government acceded to the Irish government's time-honoured request to repatriate the remains of Roger Casement, and returned the flag that had flown over the General Post …
"On Being "Intrinsical
Introduction One of the fascinations about Winnicott is his ability to surprise. It is not just that his writings are often paradoxical. They are often so unexpected. In this paper I want to pursue one such unexpected strand. My quest is more personal than textual, my interest the complex individuality of Winnicott rather than the inner coherence and continuity of his thought. In this endeavor I am prompted by a passage of Susanne Langer, a write…
