  • Getting to Where We Need to Get: A Meaningful Step Towards Understanding and Remedying White Privilege

    Dorothy Evans Holmes•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Dialogues•2022

Anen’s paper adeptly uses a racial lens to psychoanalytically examine an important but neglected aspect of racism, namely how white privilege is deeply rooted in narcissistic states of mind. The white psyche and corollaries such as having whiteness as a psychological condition are a current focus of psychoanalytic writers. Anen’s approach adds significantly to this burgeoning inquiry by adapting additional psychoanalytic tools to the inquiry. He …

    Open Access•Dorothy Evans Holmes•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2021•Cited by: 10•References: 7

Racism is a disavowed marauding presence in the white psyche, a pathological formation that weakens psychic structures and creates a vulnerability to acting out that is hateful, discombobulated, and destructive. Examining it in its cultural, historical, and clinical contexts can enable its conscious ownership and mastery, which entails a process of mourning. Because racism is carried widely in the cultural surround and individually, it must be ad…

Our Country ‘tis of We and Them: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on our Fractured American Identity Dorothy Evans Holmes (bio) I have come to the reflections offered in this paper after considering numerous contrasting cultural events. I will offer psychodynamic understandings of such contrasts. Among the events which undergird my thinking are the following. I wrote (Holmes, 2009) that Barack Obama’s election was possible, in psychodynamic terms, for…

  • The Wrecking Effects of Race and Social Class on Self and Success

    Open Access•Dorothy Evans Holmes•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•2006•Cited by: 18•References: 6

The literature on success neurosis has expanded in recent years to include a consideration of preoedipal as well as oedipal factors. Typically, success neurosis is considered to be a symptomatic result of complex intrapsychic phenomena, whether they be at the oedipal and/or preoedipal level. Having previously considered that success neurosis can also be determined by internalized representations of "real" factors, such as racism and poverty (Holm…

    Open Access•Dorothy Evans Holmes•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 10

In this paper the technique of resistance analysis is extended beyond a focus on defenses against aggressive drive derivatives to include a focus on resistances based on libidinal conflicts and resistances which stem from defenses against accessing and using autonomous ego functions. For example, patients may resist progress by forming primary defenses against expression of joyful affects, increased capacity to think, and/or new possibilities for…
