  • Planet Earth: Crumbling Metaphysical Illusion

    Robert D Stolorow•ARTICLE•American imago•2020

The author develops the claim that humans characteristically maintain a sense of protectedness by creating various forms of metaphysical illusion, replacing the tragic finitude and transience of human existence with a permanent and eternally changeless reality. One such illusion forms around planet earth itself, transformed into an indestructible metaphysical entity. It has become increasingly difficult, in the face of the ravages of climate chan…

  • Phenomenological contextualism and the finitude of knowing

    Robert D Stolorow•ARTICLE•The Humanistic Psychologist•2018

When faced with the complexity of an intersubjective system, in which one is oneself implicated, an epistemic humility that recognizes and respects the finitude of knowing is essential

  • The Tragic and the Metaphysical in Philosophy and Psychoanalysis

    Robert D Stolorow, George E Atwood•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Review•2013

This article elaborates a claim, first introduced by Wilhelm Dilthey, that metaphysics represents an illusory flight from the tragedy of human finitude. Metaphysics, of which psychoanalytic metapsychologies are a form, transforms the unbearable fragility and transience of all things human into an enduring, permanent, changeless reality, an illusory world of eternal truths. Three "clinical cases" illustrate this thesis in the work and lives of a p…

  • Legacies of the golden age: A memoir of a collaboration

    George E Atwood, Robert D Stolorow•ARTICLE•The Humanistic Psychologist•2013

This article tells the story of an intellectual and personal relationship, spanning more than 4 decades. The account begins with a golden age period in the 1970s at Rutgers University, where an effort was made to resurrect the personological tradition in psychology under the leadership of Silvan Tomkins. In spite of the eventual failure of this effort, the foundation of our collaboration had been lastingly formed. The focus of the discussion is o…

  • Heidegger and post-Cartesian psychoanalysis: My personal, psychoanalytic, and philosophical sojourn

    Robert D Stolorow•ARTICLE•The Humanistic Psychologist•2013

The dual aim of this article is to show both how Heidegger's existential philosophy enriches post-Cartesian psychoanalysis and how post-Cartesian psychoanalysis enriches Heidegger's existential philosophy. Characterized as a phenomenological contextualism, post-Cartesian psychoanalysis finds philosophical grounding in Heidegger's ontological contextualism, condensed in his term for the human kind of Being, Being-in-the-world. Specifically, Heideg…

    Open Access•Robert D Stolorow•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 4

In this article, the author chronicles the emergence of two interrelated themes that crystallized in his investigations of the phenomenology of emotional trauma over the course of more than 19 years. One pertains to the context embeddedness of emotional trauma and the other to the claim that the possibility of emotional trauma is built into our existential constitution. The author finds a synthesis of these two themes—trauma’s contextuality and i…

  • Identity and resurrective ideology in an age of trauma

    Robert D Stolorow•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Psychology•2009

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold. –William Butler Yeats I’ll be with you when the deal goes down. –Bob Dylan Emotional Trauma Over the course of the 17 years in which I have been writing about emotional trauma (Stolorow, 2007), two interweaving central themes have crystallized. On one hand, painful emotional experiences become traumatic in the absence of a relationship in which they can be held and integrated. On the other hand, emotiona…

  • Deconstructing the Myth of the Neutral Analyst: An Alternative From Intersubjective Systems Theory

    Robert D Stolorow, George E Atwood•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•1997•Cited by: 12•References: 9

A critique is offered of four conceptions of neutrality that have been prominent in the psychoanalytic literature: neutrality as (1) abstinence, (2) anonymity, (3) equidistance, and (4) empathy. It is argued that once the psychoanalytic situation is recognized as an intersubjective system of reciprocal mutual influence, the concept of neutrality is revealed to be an illusion. Hence, interpretations are always suggestions, transference is always c…

  • The Developmental Prestages of Defenses: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Implications

    Robert D Stolorow, Frank M Lachmann•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•1978•Cited by: 3•References: 2

In the interest of clarifying the distinction between psychopathology based on structural conflict and psychopathology rooted in an arrest in ego development, the hypothesis is offered that there is a developmental line for each defensive process and that a defense mechanism represents the endpoint of a series of developmental achievements. Clinical material is presented to demonstrate the decisive diagnostic and therapeutic consequences of disti…

The psychoanalytic treatment of a young woman whose father had been killed in a concentration camp when she was four years old serves to illuminate certain aspects of libidinal and ego development, particularly as it touched on the effects of losing one's father just before entering the oedipal phase and on the defensive use of denial in lieu of mourning. Further consequences of the patient's loss are seen in the extent to which it influenced the…

Childhood public school records of 30 nonmigratory, hospitalized schizophrenic adults were compared with those of 90 matched control children presumed to have become normal adults. It was concluded that a substantial proportion of children destined to be schizophrenic as adults can be identified by their behavior in public school before they break down

  • Idealization and Grandiosity: Developmental Considerations and Treatment Implications

    Frank M Lachmann, Robert D Stolorow•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•1976

Analysis of patients with narcissistic pathology offers an opportunity to study the development of specific distortions of self and object representations. Two cases are presented illustrating the development of idealizations and grandiosity. For one patient these were manifestations of a developmental arrest; for the other, defenses against object-instinctual conflict. Differences in the function of idealizations and grandiosity in the two patie…

  • Dynamic, dyadic, intersubjective systems: An evolving paradigm for psychoanalysis

    Robert D Stolorow•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Psychology•1997

Dynamic systems theory is a source of powerful new metaphors for psychoanalysis. Phenomena such as conflict, transference, resistance, and the unconscious itself are grasped from this perspective as dynamically emergent properties of self-organizing, nonlinear, dyadic, intersubjective systems. The conception of development as evolv-ing and dissolving attractor states of intersubjective systems richly illuminates the processes of pattern formation…
