  • The Protoclassic in the Maya Lowlands

Gordon R Willey, Duncan Pring et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2000

A detailed and specialist analysis of the archaeological and ceramic evidence for the transitional period between the Preclassic and Classic ages of the Mayan civilisation. Pring focuses on vessels from the principal sites of Holmul, Mountain Cow and Nohmul to challenge traditional chronologies which date the Protoclassic from 50 BC and AD 250. Includes a list of other important sites in Central America

  • The Lowland Maya “Protoclassic

    Open Access•James E Brady, Joseph W Ball et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•1998•Cited by: 24•References: 12

The term “Protoclassic,” employed regularly but inexplicitly in the literature of lowland Maya archaeology, has become increasingly nebulous and ambiguous in both meaning and usage. This paper reviews the history and use of the term and presents a formal redefinition of the Protoclassic as a ceramic stage based explicitly and exclusively on ceramic criteria. Some suggestions regarding future use of the term also are offered. The paper further add…

  • The Ceramics of Cuello, Belize

    Open Access•Laura J Kosakowsky, Duncan C Pring•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•1998•Cited by: 11•References: 13

The site of Cuello in northern Belize provides a long ceramic sequence from the early Middle Preclassic, ca. 1200b.c., to the Late Preclassic, sometime in the fourth centurya.d.Excavations begun at Cuello in 1975 were completed in 1993. The initial controversy concerning the chronological placement of the earliest pottery of the Swasey and Bladen complexes is challenged by examining the 1992 and 1993 excavated material in a “blind analysis,” with…

  • The Earliest Lowland Maya? Definition of the Swasey Phase

    Open Access•Norman Hammond, Duncan Pring et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1979•Cited by: 20•References: 8

Recent excavations in Belize have resulted in the discovery of an earlier period of sedentary occupation than has hitherto been documented in the Maya Lowlands. The Swasey phase is stratigraphically antecedent to occupations of the early Middle Formative, the earliest horizon located until now, and associated radiocarbon dates suggest a persistence from 2000-1000 b.c./2500-1300 B.C. The ceramic and lithic material culture of the phase are describ…

  • The Dating of Teotihuacan Contact at Altun Ha

    Open Access•Duncan C Pring•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1977•References: 1

Pendergast's assertion that a Teotihuacan cache at Altun Ha, Belize, should be dated to the earliest part of the Protoclassic period is questioned in the light of recent findings of the ceramics of that period. The new evidence also tends to confirm the belief that the Floral Park ceramic complex coexisted with and did not totally displace the Chicanel phase
