Open Access•Jocelyne Martínez Landín, A Goguitchaichvili et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2025

The Yucatán Peninsula, a key region of the ancient Maya civilization, has long presented challenges in establishing absolute chronological frameworks for its cultural practices. While the central regions of Mesoamerica have been extensively studied, the southern areas, including the Yucatán, remain underexplored. Limekilns, integral to lime production in pre-Hispanic Maya society, are well suited for archaeomagnetic studies due to the high temper…

  • Exclusivity in Early Maya Monumentality: Querying Egalitarianism at Ucí, Yucatán

Open Access•R Hutson, Mario Zimmermann et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2025•References: 20

The focus of these monuments was a relatively inclusive plaza. This article presents evidence of an eighth-century …

  • A preliminary revised life history of Punta Laguna, Yucatan, Mexico: A persistent place

    Open Access•Sarah Kurnick, David Rogoff et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2024•References: 67

This article presents a preliminary, revised life history of Punta Laguna, Yucatan, Mexico, and considers in detail the site's relationship to nearby communities. More specifically, this article presents the results of a type-variety analysis of the cumulative palimpsest of ceramics excavated at the site between 2017 and 2022. Unlike initial studies conducted in the 1980s, the current study suggests that Maya peoples occupied Punta Laguna continu…

This area was explored in…
