Farming Systems and Food Security in Africa: Priorities for Science and Policy under Global Change
Livestock-wealth inequalities and uptake of crop cultivation among the Maasai of Kenya and Tanzania
We examine livestock-wealth inequality by gender and age of the household head among Maasai households located in areas of contrasting land tenure and land productivity in the Amboseli, Athi-Kaputiei and Maasai Mara regions of Kenya and Tarangire-Manyara Region of Tanzania. We also investigate whether livestock-poor households are more likely to diversify their livelihood options from pastoralism to include crop cultivation. Livestock wealth ineq…

Looking Back and Forging Ahead: Thirty Years of Social Network Research on the World-System
We review three decades of research linking social network methods with world systems theory. We identify four themes nested within two versions of a general social network methodology the identification of network Roles and Position. The themes vary by the type of data and the definition of equivalence used to identify roles and positions. Second, we provide a demonstration of the general methodological approach taken in the literature, applying…

The Obsidian Blade Sequence at El Ujuxte, a Late Preclassic Site on the South Coast of Guatemala
Systematic data on about 1,200 blades from this site were summarized in terms of three ceramic phases (defined by Love 2002b) for the same site. That is, we assigned blades to phases based on the ceramic content of each provenience. Regular phase-by-phase decreases occurred in blade dimensions, weights, and length-to-width ratios. We predicted these results based on earlier findings from the site of La Blanca (Nance and Kirk 1991). The trend appe…

Introducing Multilevel Modeling
The Effect of Different Forms of Centering in Hierarchical Linear Models
Multilevel models are becoming increasingly used in applied educational social and economic research for the analysis of hierarchically nested data. In these random coefficient regression models the parameters are allowed to differ over the groups in which the observations are nested. For computational ease in deriving parameter estimates, predictors are often centered around the mean. In nested or grouped data, the option of centering around the…
The Gender Gap in Earnings: A Two-Way Nested Multiple Regression Analysis with Random Effects
The gender income gap is a much debated subject both at an analytical and economic level. This article considers both, but emphasizes the different ways the data can be analyzed. The authors show that a hierarchical linear model is the best way to evaluate male-female wage differentials. Both interindustry and intraindustry wage disparities between men and women are measured by using a technique that assumes that observations within the same indu…

On the Relationship between iTem Response Theory and Factor Analysis of Discretized Variables
Equivalence of marginal likelihood of the two-parameter normal ogive model in item response theory (IRT) and factor analysis of dichotomized variables (FA) was formally proved. The basic result on the dichotomous variables was extended to multicategory cases, both ordered and unordered categorical data. Pair comparison data arising from multiple-judgment sampling were discussed as a special case of the unordered categorical data. A taxonomy of da…
A Latent Markov Model to Correct for Measurement Error
In classical test theory the reliability of a test can be estimated by test-retest correlation models. These models do not apply to data of the lowest or nominal measurement level. Instead, models for latent Markov chains may be used to correct for measurement error in panel data from three or more waves. In this article it is shown how to use the E-M algorithm for estimating the parameters of a latent Markov chain. Where previous algorithms perf…
Nonmetric Individual Differences Multidimensional Scaling: An Alternating Least Squares Method with Optimal Scaling Features
A new procedure is discussed which fits either the weighted or simple Euclidian model to data that may (a) be defined at either the nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio levels of measurement; (b) have missing observations; (c) be symmetric or asymmetric; (d) be conditional or unconditional; (e) be replicated or unreplicated; and (f) be continuous or discrete. Various special cases of the procedure include the most commonly used individual differen…
