  • Perceptions, barriers, and aspirations

Open Access•Rahul Choudhary, Maria Parappilly et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2025

The underrepresentation of women in university science programs highlights the need to understand factors influencing schoolgirls’ Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) career choices. We applied the socio-cognitive career theory (SCCT) model and a structured STEM enrichment framework to design a three-day intervention for Grade 9 female students. The intervention included presentations by female role models, hands-on STEM work…

  • Who excludes? Young People's Experience of Social Exclusion

Open Access•G Redmond, Gill Main et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Policy•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 32

Existing policy research has not comprehensively examined the processes by which young people experience social exclusion: that is, the relationships among different risk factors for exclusion, their actual experiences of exclusion, and outcomes that matter for their life chances. Drawing on data from a survey of Australian 13-14 year olds (N=3,535), this paper adapts the Bristol Social Exclusion Matrix to examine pathways from young people's per…

  • The Association between Diabetes and Human T-Cell Leukaemia Virus Type-1 (HTLV-1) with Strongyloides stercoralis

Open Access•Mohammad Radwanur Talukder, Hai Pham et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

In central Australia, an area that is endemic for the human T-cell leukaemia virus type-1 (HTLV-1), the prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis and its association with other health conditions are unknown. A cross-sectional community-based survey was conducted in seven remote Aboriginal communities in central Australia, from 2014 to 2018. All residents aged ≥10 years were invited to complete a health survey and to provide blood for Strongyloides …

  • Projects-of-self and projects-of-family

G Redmond, Jen Skattebol et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2022•References: 49

Young people are encouraged to take responsibility for their educational outcomes by actively engaging in their education (their ‘project-of-self’), but many also take responsibility for the care of family members who have serious health concerns (their ‘project-of-family’). Drawing on the concepts of responsibilisation and neoliberal governance, and a feminist ethic of care, we aim to better understand how young people with care responsibilities…

  • Ageing and Alcohol

Open Access•Agnès Roche, Ann M Roche et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2020•References: 3

Objectives: Alcohol consumption and harms among older people are increasing. We examined different demographic characteristics and drinking patterns among an older population. Methods: Secondary analyses of nationally representative Australian data; subjects aged 50+ years ( N = 10,856). Two-step cluster analysis was performed to identify demographic groups and alcohol consumption behaviours. Results: Three groups were identified: Group 1 (older,…

  • Effect of Native and Acetylated Dietary Resistant Starches on Intestinal Fermentative Capacity of Normal and Stunted Children in Southern India

Open Access•Balamurugan Ramadass, Srinivasan Pugazhendhi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

The health benefits of dietary amylase resistant starch (RS) arise from intestinal microbial fermentation and generation of short chain fatty acids (SCFA). We compared the intestinal fermentative capability of stunted and nonstunted ('healthy') children in southern India using two types of RS: high amylose maize starch (HAMS) and acetylated HAMS (HAMSA). Twenty children (10 stunted and 10 healthy) aged 2 to 5 years were fed biscuits containing HA…

  • The potential role of irisin in the thermoregulatory responses to mild cold exposure in adults

Open Access•Emily Calton, Emily K Calton et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2016

Mild cold exposure increased vasoconstriction with a drop in IET and these were related. Greater irisin was related to a greater fasting fat oxidation in the absence of shivering. A potential gender bias in thermoregulation was noted. Am. J. Hum. Biol. 28:699-704, 2016. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

  • Human T-Lymphotropic Virus type 1 infection in an Indigenous Australian population

Open Access•Lloyd Einsiedel, Richard J Woodman et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

This study confirms that HTLV-1 is highly endemic to central Australia. Although childhood infection was documented, HTLV-1 infection in adults was closely associated with increasing age, male gender and STI history. Multiple modes of transmission are therefore likely to contribute to high rates of HTLV-1 infection in the Indigenous Australian population. Future strategies to control HTLV-1 transmission in this population require careful communit…

  • Is self‐management feasible and acceptable for addressing nutrition and physical activity needs of cancer survivors

Open Access•Sharon Lawn, Stephanie Zrim et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2015

BACKGROUND: Self-management is recommended for patients with chronic conditions, but its use with cancer survivors is underexplored. Optimal strategies for achieving lifestyle changes in cancer survivors are not known. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of self-management-based nutrition and physical activity interventions for cancer survivors. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Adult survivors (n …

Carl Pollard, Christina Pollard et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•Cited by: 10•References: 24

Objectives. We monitored changes in self-reported knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding fruit and vegetable consumption in Western Australia prior to and after a healthful-eating campaign. Methods. We obtained telephone survey data from 2854 adults in Perth from Nutrition Monitoring Surveys conducted in 1995, 1998, 2001, and 2004. The “Go for 2&5” fruit and vegetable campaign was implemented from 2002 to 2005. Results. We observed changes…
