Adapting reactive case detection strategies for high-risk populations to increase malaria infection detection in Aceh Province, Indonesia
Reactive case detection (RACD), or testing and treatment of close contacts of recent malaria cases, is widely used in settings nearing malaria elimination, but often results in very low yield and uncertain impact. In areas where the primary vector exposure occurs outside the home, adapting RACD to target high-risk populations with specific exposure profiles may increase yield, surveillance value, and impact on treatment rates and transmission. We…
Unwritten Rules: Informal Institutions in Established Democracies
Scholars of the developing world have driven a surge of interest in unwritten or informal institutions as determinants of political outcomes. In advanced industrial democracies, by contrast, informal institutions often remain consigned to the analytic margins. This article makes a case for greater attention to informal political institutions in established democracies, and it introduces a theoretical framework to support such analysis. Informal i…
Campaigning and the Catch-All Party: The Process of Party Transformation in Britain
Otto Kirchheimer’s well-known diagnosis of ‘catch-all’ partism in Western Europe rests on an implicit causal argument about the consequences of social change for political parties. This article takes up the causal story underlying Kirchheimer’s account and traces its implications for a specific, though central, party activity: campaigning. As Kirchheimer discerned, the transformation of advanced industrial societies radically altered the context …
Self‐Prophecy Effects and Voter Turnout: An Experimental Replication
Psychological research has found that being asked to predict one's future actions can bring about subsequent behavior consistent with the prediction but different from what would have occurred had no prediction been made. In a 1987 study, Greenwald, Carnot, Beach, and Young induced an increase in voting behavior by means of such a “self‐prophecy” effect: Undergraduates who were asked to predict whether they would vote in an upcoming election were…

Hate Crime: An Emergent Research Agenda
Hate crime is difficult to define, measure, and explain. After summarizing some of the leading conceptual issues and theoretical perspectives, we discuss the practical difficulties associated with data collection. Although the research literature remains small and largely descriptive, recent studies have begun to relate hate crime patterns to economic cycles, population flows, and changes in the political environment. The task ahead is to extend …
