  • A Profile of Current Trends in Family Mobility in Florida: 2023

John Taylor, Elwood Carlson et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2024•References: 25

This paper is divided into three parts. First, we analyze data from the 2016-2020 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau to assess the demographic structure of Florida families. We find differences between Florida and other parts of the United States. These differences are the result of trends and patterns in migration to, from and within the state. Second, we examine the role that disasters in general and hurricanes in par…

Open Access•Kathryn Harker Tillman, Ladanya Ramirez Surmeier et al.•ARTICLE•Social Currents•2022•References: 33

We use data from a random sample of students collected at two large public universities, one in the Midwestern region and one in the Southeastern region of the U.S., to document the prevalence of self-reported “interracial” romantic relationships (SR-IRRs) and the extent to which self-identifications differ from researcher-defined categorizations that label as “interracial/interethnic” all partnerships that cross racial or Latino/Hispanic ethnic …

Open Access•Byron Miller, Savanah Catalina et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 31

Although attitudes toward interracial romantic relationships (IRRs) have generally improved over the years, many Americans still disapprove of their family members being in IRRs. Prior studies have examined correlates of individual-level attitudes about interracial romance, but less is known about whether family members' attitudes are directly associated with young people's decisions to date interracially. Using data collected from 790 romantical…

    Kathryn Harker Tillman, K L Brewster et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•2019•Cited by: 30•References: 105

Sociological research has long recognized the important role that intimate relationships play in young people's lives. In recent decades, relationship formation patterns and relationship trajectories during the early years of adulthood have become increasingly diverse and complex. In recognition of this, we review contemporary research on sexual and romantic relationships among young adults in the United States, noting how relationship attitudes,…

Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, this research examines the association between timing of oral sex initiation and marital and cohabiting relationship satisfaction among young adults. Findings indicate that women who transition to oral sex 'late' or who have no oral sex experience report higher levels of relationship satisfaction in their current coresidential unions than do women who transition at a 'normative'…

  • Childhood Family Structure and Romantic Relationships During the Transition to Adulthood

    Open Access•Giuseppina Valle, Kathryn Harker Tillman•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 44

We use the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) to examine whether childhood family structure experiences influence the development of romantic relationships during adolescence and whether adolescent relationships, in turn, help to shape long-term relationship trajectories. Young people who live in 'nontraditional' families during their childhood are more likely than their peers to engage in romantic relationships during …

    K L Brewster, Kathryn Harker Tillman•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Cited by: 14•References: 34

Objectives. We examined interrelationships among the 3 dimensions of sexual orientation—self-identity, sexual attraction, and sexual experience—and their associations with substance use among adolescents and young adults. Methods. To estimate total and net associations of sexual identity, attraction, and experience with use of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol, we applied logistic regression to cross-sectional data from the National Survey of Family Gr…

The prevention of underage drinking and related outcomes focuses on strengthening protective factors. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health ( N = 3,862), the authors examine the effects of protective factors from three domains of adolescents' lives (individual, familial, and extrafamilial) on experiencing negative consequences of alcohol use, while controlling for relevant risk factors, among youth who have already …

  • Risky Sexual Behaviors Among Hispanic Young Adults In South Florida: Nativity, Age at Immigration And Gender Differences

    Open Access•Ursula Weiß, Kathryn Harker Tillman•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Sexual and…•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Given the diversity of nativity and immigration histories among Hispanics in the United States, it is important that research examine both factors. An understanding of their joint association with sexual activity, plus the conditioning effects of gender, could help professionals to develop effective education and prevention programs for young people who are at risk for engaging in potentially dangerous sexual behavior

Objective. This article documents nativity differentials in depressive symptoms among Hispanics during their initial years of adulthood and explores how ethnicity, sociodemographic characteristics, and exposure to stressful life events and changes in social roles help explain those differentials. Methods. Data are drawn from a large‐scale two‐wave community study of stress, psychiatric well‐being, and substance use disorders among young adults. O…
