Consequences of Eviction-Led Forced Mobility for School-Age Children in Houston
Eviction cases are concentrated among renter households with children, yet we know little about the repercussions of evictions for children's educational trajectories. In this study, we link eviction records in Harris County, Texas, to educational records of students enrolled in the Houston Independent School District between 2002 and 2016. Online Nonprobability Samples
Online nonprobability samples provide social scientists with opportunities to conduct surveys and experiments on large, diverse samples at modest prices. Researchers may find bewildering the options offered by the many commercial entities that provide research participants, and our review seeks to orient researchers to key issues about their use. We discuss principles and evidence regarding estimates from nonprobability samples versus those from …
Protecting the Most Vulnerable: Policy Response and Eviction Filing Patterns During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic crisis exposed the U.S. rental housing market to extraordinary stress. Policymakers at the federal, state, and local levels established eviction moratoria and a number of additional direct and indirect renter-supportive measures in a bid to prevent a surge in evictions and associated public health risks. This article assesses the net efficacy of these interventions, analyzing changes in eviction filing…
Fracking Evictions: Housing Instability in a Fossil Fuel Boomtown
In 2019, North Dakota accounted for 11% of American oil production.Rural counties like Williams County, ND experienced rapid inmigration of oilfield workers and, consequently, acute housing shortages.Williams County provides an excellent opportunity to study the relationship between commodity booms and housing instability because its housing market is tied so tightly to the production of a single commodity. While fracking is often presented as an …
Neighborhoods with the Highest Eviction Filing Rates Have the Lowest Levels of Covid-19 Vaccination
The aim of this visualization is to determine whether populations at greatest risk for eviction have been vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to the end of the U.S. federal eviction moratorium. The authors identified nine jurisdictions in which both records of recent eviction filings and data on COVID-19 vaccination were available at the ZIP code level. In every jurisdiction, the ZIP codes with the highest rates of eviction filing during the pandem…
