The Impact of Macro- and Micro-Economic Uncertainty on Family Formation in The Netherlands
Driegeneraties- en tweeoudersvragen over het opleidingsniveau van mannen en vrouwen in Nederland
This article estimates for the Netherlands linear regression models for an individual’s level of education by bringing in parental as well as grandparental level of education. The prime question is that of the association between education in the first and third generation after holding constant education in the second generation. For the empirical analysis, we used the five available waves of the Family Survey Dutch Population as conducted in 19…
De Tweede Wereldoorlog en statusverwerving
World War II and occupational status attainment. In this study we include personal war experiences in Duncan’s path model of status attainment to answer the following research question: To what extent can personal war experiences explain the occupational status of Dutch people who experienced World War II? We expect that personal war experiences have a detrimental effect on the human capital formation, which in turn leads to a lower educational le…
Trends in the Occupational Returns to Educational Credentials in the Dutch Labor Market
In this article, we determine changes in the relationship between education and the labor market in The Netherlands since 1960, for which both developments in the distribution of the labor force according to educational attainment and level of occupation (structural changes) and shifts in the mechanism to allocate educated individuals to occupational positions (which modify the net association between education and occupation) are used. To observ…
Dutch Jews as Perceived by Themselves and by Others
How did Jews in the Netherlands view themselves and how were they viewed by others? This is the single theme around which the twenty-five essays in this volume, written by scholars from the Netherlands, Israel and other countries, revolve. The studies encompass a variety of topics and periods, from the beginning of the Jewish settlement in the Dutch Republic through the Shoah and its aftermath. They include examinations of the Sephardi Jews in th…
Qualifications and the Allocation Process of Young Men and Women in the Swedish Labour Market
Social stratification is a phenomenon that relates to the allocation of people to positions in the class structure. If the rewards connected with different social positions are perceived as trophies, then the allocation process is the competition. One must not necessarily adhere to the view of life as a rat-race to acknowledge the crucial role that agencies which shape the allocation regime play for individuals in a given society. Individuals adj…
Comparative Intergenerational Stratification Research
In this article we review 40 years of cross-national comparative research on the intergenerational transmission of socioeconomic advantage, with particular attention to developments over the past 15 years-that is, since the transition between (what have become known as) the second and third generations of social stratification and mobility research. We identify the generations by a set of core studies and categorize them with respect to data coll…
Educational heterogamy and father-to-son occupational mobility in 23 industrial nations
This article presents 41 educational heterogamy tables for 23 industrial nations after World War II. Countries differ in gross heterogamy rates and relative chances of heterogamy. Evidence is found in favour of a trend towards higher gross rates of heterogamy and towards more equal jelative chances of heterogamy. Hypotheses on effects of economic and political factors are tested. The contribution these factors make to the explanation of relative …
