Både arbeiderbevegelsen og den læstadianske vekkelsen tilbød løsninger for et bedre liv. Begge grupper hadde stor appell i den nordnorske småkårsbefolkningen. Mange tilsluttet seg begge bevegelsenes kamp for bedre kår og større selvbestemmelse.
