Archaeological Findings on Suchu Island (Amur Region) in 1997
The article introduces complete findings of the research on the well-known Suchu Island (Excavation VIII) carried out in 1997. We describe the conditions of excavations, stratigraphy and arrangement of half-dugout-dwellings 6 and 7, lithic artifacts, ceramics, household and non-utilitarian items. Materials from Dwelling 2 on Suchu Island, the Lower Amur (1977 Season, Excavation III)
Southern Boundaries of Osipovka Cultural Area
The article concentrates on the Early Neolithic Osipovka culture of the Lower Amur and its southern boundaries. Due to the resumption of excavations at the Xiaonanshan site in the left bank of Ussuri River, Heilongjiang province, China, recently, it has become possible to conduct a comparative study of technical and typological characteristics of the ceramic material of these two territories. The following features were revealed: 1. Ceramics in b…
Materials from Dwelling 2 on Suchu Island, the Lower Amur (1977 Season, Excavation III)
This article presents the fi nal results of excavations at one of the largest Neolithic sites in northeastern Asia— a settlement on Suchu Island on the Amur. Most of the rich collection (3967 spec.), owned by IAET SB RAS (stone tools, ceramics, ornaments, and artistic and ritual artifacts), has not been described before. This publication focuses on the analysis of artifacts from dwelling 2 (excavation III, 1977). We describe the construction of t…

A Multidisciplinary Study of Finds from Suchu Island (1973 Season, Excavation II, Dwelling 1)
We analyze new finds from a Neolithic dwelling 1 from excavation II at the Suchu Island, on the Amur River. We analyzed an assemblage of 3788 lithics and ceramics, along with field records housed at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of SB RAS. A Study of Finds from Excavation I at Suchu Island, the Lower Amur (the 1974 Field Season)
Finds unearthed at the Suchu settlement in 1974 include lithics, ceramics, and portable art and ritual objects, now owned by the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography in Novosibirsk. Most of them have not been described before. In this study, they are analyzed using methods of stratigraphy, planigraphy (assessment of position within and between dwellings), petrography and typology (lithics), binocular microscopy (ceramics), and chronology (cer…
A Comprehensive Study of Neolithic Stone Tools from Dwelling D on Suchu Island, the Lower Amur (1974, Excavation Area I)
We analyze stone tools unearthed in 1974 from a Neolithic dwelling D (excavation area I) on Suchu Island, the Lower Amur. The assemblage includes 1518 artifacts attributed to the Malyshevo, Kondon, and Voznesenovskoye cultures, to the Belkachi complex, and to the Final Neolithic. To identify the raw material, a microscopically guided petrographic analysis was carried out. The most frequently used rocks were sedimentary (siltstone, mudstone, and s…
A Morphological Analysis of Malyshevo Middle Neolithic Pottery from the Lower Amur
We analyze the forms of clay vessels from the Malyshevo Middle Neolithic sites on the Lower Amur, and compare them with those relating to the contemporaneous Late Kondon culture of the same region and to the Boisman and Vetka cultures in Primorye, using V.F. Genning’s methodology. Based on the results, a reconstruction of cultural contacts in the Russian Far East during the Middle Neolithic is attempted. On the other hand, H.A. Nordström’s approa…
Tentative Findings from Excavations on Suchu Island, Amur (1973 Season, Excavation I)

Artifacts, totaling 4407 specimens, include stone tools, ceramics, and objects of art and cult. …
The First Systematic Excavations on Suchu Island and Radiocarbon Dates of the Site (1972)
The article presents unpublished findings on the 1972 systematic excavations at a radiocarbon-dated Neolithic site on Suchu Island, Khabarovsk Region. Stratigraphy, dwellings associated with the Malyshevo culture (4th–3rd millennia BC), typological and functional properties of stone tools, cultural and chronological attribution of ceramics and of clay artifacts relating to art and ritual are discussed, with reference to parallels from other Neoli…
Ornamental Traditions of the Lower Amur Neolithic
This article addresses the issue of decorative patterns in Lower Amur Neolithic ceramics. Based on structural and functional analysis, features shared by the Malyshevo, Kondon, and Voznesenskoye ceramic traditions are revealed. Characteristic features of Malyshevo and Voznesenskoye pottery include comb and “gearwheel” imprints, various parts of the vessel being painted, rims decorated with straight and wavy rolls, designs based on meanders, spira…
