  • Methodological Aspects of Determining Type, Age, and Origin of Archaeological Wood

    Open Access•Myglan, G T Omurova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020•Cited by: 3

Archaeological studies in the forest-tundra zone of Western Siberia are highly relevant to studying the material culture, social structure, and ethnic history. The presence of permafrost ensures the unique preservation of organics in cultural layers, including timber, which makes it possible to conduct dendrochronological studies (calendar dating of samples, determination of species composition, typological analysis, and the source of the timber …

  • Reconstruction of Extreme Paleoclimatic Events in Northwestern Siberia Using Ancient Wood From Fort Nadym

    Open Access•G T Omurova, Valentin V Barinov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 15

This study addresses the occurrence of damage to the anatomical structure (frost rings, light rings, and fluctuations of the wood density) and missing tree rings in wood samples from Fort Nadym—a medieval fort in the subarctic zone of Western Siberia. The chronology of extreme climatic events was reconstructed for the 1170–1505 period. We used multiple criteria such as severity of events; coincidence of structural pathologies and missing annual r…

  • August to July Precipitation from Tree Rings in the Forest-Steppe Zone of Central Siberia (Russia)

Santosh K Shah, Ramzi Touchan et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2015

The goal of this research report is to describe annual precipitation reconstruction from Pinus sylvestris trees on three sites in the Abakan region, located in the Minusinsk Depression, at the confluence of the Yenisei and Abakan Rivers, Russia. The study was performed during the 4th annual international summer course “Tree Rings, Climate, Natural Resources and Human Interaction” held in Abakan, 5-19 August 2013. The reconstruction, for the 12-mo…
