  • The Early Paleolithic Go Da Site and the Bifacial Lithic Industries of Southeast Asia

    Open Access•A V Kandyba, A M Chekha et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 21

The lithic industry of the stratified site Go Da in Central Vietnam is described, and its place among the contemporaneous Early Paleolithic sites of East and Southeast Asia is determined. Results of a morphological technotypological analysis of the Go Da assemblage are provided. Go Da is attributed to the An Khe-type sites situated in the eponymous area of Vietnam. Cores and tools were made from pebbles, less often from fl akes. Primary reduction…

  • The Early Upper Paleolithic of the Gobi Altai Region in Mongolia (Based on Materials From the Chikhen-2 Site)

    Open Access•A P Derevianko, V Markin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 8

Here, we present technological, typological and morphological analyses of the Pleistocene lithic assemblages excavated from Horizons 3–2.5 of the multicomponent Chikhen-2 site located on the southern piedmont of the Gobi Altai Range, southern Mongolia. Descriptions of geomorphology, stratigraphy, and archaeological finds are given, along with an analysis of reduction and secondary trimming techniques and retouch typology. Single-platform mono-fro…

  • Early Upper Paleolithic Stone Tool Technologies of Northern Mongolia

    Open Access•A P Derevianko, Evgeny P Rybin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2013•Cited by: 25•References: 5

Based on regularly retouched tools recovered from the Early Upper Paleolithic Tolbor-4 and Tolbor-15 sites in the Khangai Mountains of northern Mongolia, we reconstruct the development of cores from large bidirectional forms for the production of elongated blades to flat unidirectional and orthogonal nuclei. Blanks also became progressively smaller, while the toolkit remained virtually unchanged. Two detectable principal technological trends incl…

  • Chronology and Periodization of Upper Paleolithic Sites in Mongolia

    Open Access•Sergei A Gladyshev, Y N Garkusha et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2010•Cited by: 30•References: 2

Based on archaeological materials recovered from stratified sites in the Khangai Mountains and the Gobi Altai regions and new radiocarbon dates for the Tolbor-4 and 15 localities, a tripartite chronological subdivision of the Mongolian Upper Paleolithic is suggested. The first period is the Early Upper Paleolithic (40–26 ka BP). Sites dating to this period have been discovered both in the Khangai and the Gobi Altai regions. The second period bega…

  • Environment and Human Behavior in Northern Mongolia During the Upper Pleistocene

    Open Access•L Kolomiets, V L Kolomiets et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 3

This paper discusses the results of multidisciplinary studies of culture-bearing horizons uncovered at the Tolbor-4 site in Mongolia. Lithological analysis suggests that the entire sedimentary sequence belongs to the terminal Upper Pleistocene. The lowermost portion of the profi le is attributed to the late Zyryanka period, the middle portion to the Karga period, and the upper portion, Layers 2 and 3, to the Sartan period. Layers 4 and 5 seem to …

  • New Insights Into the Archaeological Record at Chikhen Agui Rockshelter (Mongolia)

    Open Access•A P Derevianko, John W Olsen et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2008•Cited by: 14•References: 4

The paper continues a series of publications dedicated to the analysis of the archaeological fi ndings from Chikhen Agui Rockshelter. Chikhen Agui is among the few stratifi ed archaeological sites that have been located in Mongolia. In the previous papers, Chikhen Agui has been defi ned as a seasonal camp of the Early Holocene hunters. In the present publication, the authors employ the multifunctional approach to the analysis of the whole complex…
