  • The unique Late Paleolithic artifactual bone assemblage from the Volchia Griva site, Western Siberia

    Open Access•Sergey V Leshchinskiy, N Zenin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

In 2020, a unique bone assemblage was found at the Late Paleolithic site Volchia Griva. Its base is made of a distal mammoth femur minus epiphysis, in which a cavity has been hollowed out. Impact notches along the edges of the cavity and holes in the metaphysis prove the human-made nature of this specimen. A portion of a polar fox cranium, half of a fox hemimandible, a fox tooth, and a large mammal rib fragment were enclosed in the cavity. The ma…

  • Artifacts of the Paleometal Age from the Ust-Ulma III Site in Amur Region

    Open Access•N Zenin, P Nesterov•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2021

Three sites of Ust-Ulma I—III were explored in the 1980s in the Mazanovsky District of Amur Region, at the mouth of the Ulma River which flows into the Selemdzha River, on its left side. Essentially, the evidence from these sites represents the Late Paleolithic Selemdzha culture. However, the upper cultural layer at these sites contained the evidence both from the Neolithic (Ust-Ulma I) and the Paleometal Age. Most of the artifacts, including pot…

  • Early Middle Paleolithic Industries in Southeastern Dagestan

    A G Rybalko, N Zenin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020

  • Early Middle Paleolithic Industries in Southeastern Dagestan

    Open Access•A G Rybalko, N Zenin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020•Cited by: 1

This study addresses lithic assemblages from the Middle Paleolithic sites Darvagchay-Zaliv-1 and Darvagchay-Zaliv-4, which are highly relevant to the understanding of this stage in Dagestan. We examine paleoclimatic conditions prevailing during the sedimentation at these sites. A detailed description of lithics is provided. Artifacts were discovered in a minimally disturbed paleosol. They represent the Middle Paleolithic, specifi cally Levallois …

  • Excavations at Darvagchay-Zaliv-4

    Open Access•A P Derevianko, A G Rybalko et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2018•Cited by: 1

This article outlines the results of multidisciplinary studies at Darvagchay-Zaliv-4—an Early Paleolithic site in northeastern Caucasus. We focus on lithics, which we compare with those from key Early Paleolithic sites in Dagestan and other regions of Caucasus. Based on the totality of typological and technological criteria, the industry is Acheulean and is characterized by the scarcity of distinct core-shaped forms and tools. The few functional …

    Open Access•A P Derevianko, N Zenin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 1

Until recently, few Paleolithic research projects have been carried out in Dagestan in the Caucasus. The fi rst information on Lower Paleolithic artifacts collected from the surface in the vicinity of the village of Gedjuh was provided by M.Z. Panichkina in the late 1930s. Later, V.G. Kotovich made an archaeological survey of this area in the 1950s (Kotovich, 1964). He identifi ed the artifacts recovered from the Chumus-Inits site as the earliest…

    Open Access•N Zenin, V N Zenin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2006•Cited by: 39•References: 3

Artifacts were fi rst discovered at Lugovskoe in 1999 during the collection of faunal remains (Pavlov, Maschenko, 2001). The small collection included small debris, fl akes, a blade with a retouched proximal edge, and two large artifacts: a hammerstone made on a quartzite pebble, and a bidirectional core made on a gray fi ne-grained sandstone cobble. These artifacts suggested that the mammoth assemblage was associated with a Paleolithic site. To …
