  • Potential of Micro-Computed Tomography in Analyzing Insert Fixation in Composite Tools

    Open Access•Ekaterina Bocharova, D V Kozhevnikova et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

This study presents the results of using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) for non-destructive analysis of the internal structure of composite slotted tools. The research focused on technological features of the assembly and fixation of microblade inserts, distribution of adhesive material, the depth of insertion, and the orientation of individual elements. Four experimental samples were made of antler and bone; microblade inserts were fi xed …

  • Virtual Reconstruction of Flakes Based on 3D Modeling of Negative Surfaces on Cores and Scrapers

    Open Access•P V Chistiakov, P V Chistyakov et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

This article discusses the development and testing of a new approach to the virtual reconstruction of lithic artifacts, aimed at filling gaps in archaeological collections. Unlike existing approaches, which are primarily focused on objects with bilateral symmetry, the proposed methodology allows for the reconstruction of missing flakes based on their negatives remaining on matrices—cores and tool preforms, such as Quina scrapers. The method was s…

  • Stone Pendants from the Early Upper Paleolithic Site of Sabanikha-3 (Materials from 2022–2025 Field Seasons)

Open Access•V M Kharevich, Aliona Kharevich et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

This article provides an analysis of stone pendants from the Early Upper Paleolithic site Sabanikha-3 in Middle Yenisei. The site is particularly significant as its cultural layer is in situ, remaining intact and undisturbed—a rare occurrence for EUP in this region. Excavations in 2022–2025 yielded a collection including four items: three pendants and a disk fragment. Pendant No. 1 is a complete, sub-cylindrical piece with a defined “head” and a …

  • Processed Tubular Bones of Birds and Small Mammals: From Utilitarian Objects to Personal Ornaments and Musical Instruments

    Open Access•D V Kozhevnikova, Darya Kozhevnikova•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

This article addresses the issues of functional identification of modified tubular bones of birds and small mammals — a widespread yet challenging category of archaeological finds from sites dating from the Upper Paleolithic to the recent ethnographical period. The external morphological simplicity of these objects contrasts with the wide spectrum of their potential usages, which feature has complicated their unambiguous attribution. The study tr…

  • Upper Paleolithic “Sounding Artifacts” from Mesin, Ukraine: Modification Marks

    Open Access•L V Lbova, Pavel Volkov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 7

Upper Paleolithic musical instruments and the criteria whereby they may be distinguished have not received enough attention in Russian archaeology. A considerable number of presumed musical instruments have been found in Eurasia. The examination of such artifacts from Mesin has revealed modifications by humans that clearly indicate musical function. In terms of modern classification, they might be untuned percussion instruments of both resonator …
