Prehistoric Occupation of Loloata Island Papua New Guinea
Loloata Island is a small island lying immediately to the south of Motupore Island in Bootless Bay, 15 km southeast of Port Moresby. Like Motupore Island it is elongated, steep and narrow, being an extension of the same mainland strike ridge which was truncated during the postglacial rise in sea level about 6000 years ago (Swadling and Pain l980:62). While a considerable amount of research has been carried out on the prehistory and archaeology of…
The recent prehistoric exploitation of edible mussel in Aboriginal shell middens in southern New South Wales
Nundera Point - An Experiment in Stabilising A Foredune Shell Midden
In recent years, the management of Aboriginal sites has received greater attention from archaeologists, particularly those who work in government organisations responsible for site protection. A major problem is the protection of sites damaged by erosion. This paper presents the results of an experiment in stabilising a midden eroding out of a coastal foredune, a commonly encountered situation. Dune stabilisation is undertaken for a variety of re…
A shell midden excavation at Pambula Lake on the far south coast of New South Wales
Exploitation of Offshore Islands along the New South Wales Coastline
Islands in the coastal zone can be considered in two groups: those within inshore localities such as the tidal reaches of rivers or estuarine embayments, and those lying offshore. Islands in tidal rivers or estuaries along the coastal zone commonly have shell midden sites on them which appear from survey information to be very similar to adjacent 'mainland' sites
Barbecues at Burrill Lake
The Stuarts Point Shell Midden Complex
The Stuarts Point shell midden complex is located to the west of the mouth of the Macleay River in northern New South Wales. This group of middens has been mapped and recorded in the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Aboriginal Sites file as extending over 2.5 km through Portions 125, 146, 186 and R-5497 Parish of Clybucca

On Lithic Terminology
The two differing definitions of lithic as used by archaeologists when referring to stone in archaeological sites is discussed. Archaeologists working at the research frontiers of prehistory are advised to use stone rather than lithics
Are There Prehistoric Shell Middens on Rottnest Island
In August 1973, during a one-day bike and bus tour of Rottnest Island, we observed a number of different types of shell bed. The most massive of these were seen around the lakes at the eastern end of the island and there is no doubt that these are natural marine shell beds. However elsewhere shelly deposits were seen whose origin we could not determine with certainty
An Archaeological Survey of Montagu Island, N.S.W
Report on site surveys on Montagu Island N.S.W. Montagu Island, or Barunguba lies 7km from Barunga point and approximately 10 km southeast of Narooma, New South Wales. Traces of former Aboriginal occupation occur on Montagu Island. This work formed part of a survey of archaeological sites on the N.S.W. south coast conducted, under the guidance of R.J. Lampert, for the Center for Resource and Environmental Studies, A.N.U
