    Open Access•Geoffrey Clark, Antoine De Biran•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 6

Survivor-camps were an unavoidable and particular category of terrestrial shore-camp when European scientific, mercantile and imperial interests began to impinge significantly on the islands of the Pacific Ocean. In 1783 the packet Antelope was wrecked in the Palau Islands and the account of the ‘new’ archipelago, first published in 1788, was, after Cook's voyages, the most popular Pacific text in the late-18th century. The results of archaeologi…

  • Geophysical Investigations at the Pulemelei Mound

    Open Access•Geoffrey Clark, Antoine De Biran•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 10

To obtain further information concerning the internal structure of the mound Pulemelei mound and its temporal and spatial relation to structures and habitation areas in the vicinity, investigations using remote sensing methods ground penetrating radar and a magnetometer have been employed. The use of geophysical techniques at Pulemelei was a pilot project to evaluate if they might be applied more broadly to monumental sites in the Pacific

  • Times of sand: Sedimentary history and archaeology at the Sigatoka Dunes, Fiji

    Open Access•A Anderson, Richard G Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2006•Cited by: 11•References: 9

The orthodox archaeological sequence at the Sigatoka Dunes site (VL 16/1) in Fiji proposes three phases of occupation spanning Fijian prehistory, each associated with a period of dune stability. It has been taken as the standard model of Fijian prehistory for more than 30 years. Recently, however, it has been argued that there is no stratigraphic support for three discrete levels and that the occupation history was fragmented, complex, and contin…
