  • Geochemistry of Stone Tools Reveals the Crossroads of East Polynesia

Open Access•Marshall Weisler, Robert Bolhar et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2026

Geochemical studies of basalt quarries, rock sources and stone adzes and their biproducts found at distant habitation sites have increasingly allowed archaeologists to track the direction of island colonisation and post‐settlement interaction and proffer explanations for the development of social complexity in Polynesia. The Tuamotu Archipelago is unrivalled for studying inter‐archipelago transfer of stone tools in East Polynesia, as the islands …

  • The archaeological documentation and geochemistry of the Rua Tokitoki adze quarry and the Poike fine‐grain basalt source on Rapa Nui (Easter Island)

    Open Access•Dale F Simpson, Dale Simpson et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 40

Rapa Nui is famous for itsmoai(statues) andahu(platforms), yet research into the island's many basalt quarries, sources and workshops is limited. These geological and archaeological sites provided the raw materials for tools such astoki(adzes and picks), which facilitated the manufacture of Easter Island's iconic stonework. Other basaltic tools such ashoe(knives),ohio(axes) andmangai mā‘ea(stone fishhooks) served for subsistence practices. Howeve…

  • Determining the geochemical variability of fine‐grained basalt sources/quarries for facilitating prehistoric interaction studies in P olynesia

    Open Access•Marshall Weisler, Robert Bolhar et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2016•Citada por: 9•Referências: 22

Polynesian adze sourcing studies that rely on geochemical analyses to assign distant artefacts to a source or quarry have been undertaken for more than three decades. Understanding intra‐source geochemical variability is essential for robust artefact source assignments, yet these data are not available for most quarries. We provide a seven‐step protocol for sampling source rocks and associated artefacts at quarries and, using the large Eiao quarr…

  • Geochemistry and Technology of Basaltic Glass Artefacts from an Embedded Source and Two High-altitude Base Camps in the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Complex, Hawai‘i

    Open Access•Patrick C Mccoy, Marshall I Weisler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific Archaeology•2015

Located at the base of an escarpment at ~3720 m elevation, in the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Complex, Hawai‘i Island, is a small outcrop of basaltic glass that was utilised by adze makers for at least several hundred years as a source of toolstone for the manufacture of small, expedient flake tools. A test excavation of this previously unknown source/quarry was undertaken in 1976 to obtain a sample of artefacts to compare with what appeared to be lith…

  • Reproducibility of Elemental Analyses of Basaltic Stone Artefacts by Quadruple Icp–ms Using Different Sample Sizes and Digestion Methods, With Implications for Archaeological Research

Open Access•Jinlong Ma, Robert Bolhar et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2011•Citada por: 2•Referências: 8

Using high‐precision inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS), we measured > 40 elements in basalts sampled by diamond micro‐drills to evaluate the effectiveness of different digestion methods and the reproducibility of elemental analysis for different sample sizes from 5 mg to 100 mg. The results indicate that those elements that are most suitable for geochemical characterization, such as rare earth elements (REE), high‐field streng…
