New discoveries from the early Māori village at Shag River Mouth, New Zealand, reveal intestinal parasites
Presented here are the results of archaeoparasitological analysis of habitation layers at Shag River Mouth, Otago coast. Two types of helminth eggs were identified: The first type is Toxocara canis , associated with the introduced kurī dog ( Canis familiaris ), which could have adversely affected local people and their dogs. The other type very closely resembles that of Stringopotaenia psittacea , associated with the critically endangered endemic…
A reassessment of settlement patterns and subsistence atPointDurham,ChathamIsland
Orthodox reconstructions of subsistence and settlement patterns onChathamIsland proposed that throughout the pre‐contact period,Moriori lived within small home ranges and relied for food predominantly on fur seals, with plant foods being of little importance. Reassessment of thePointDurham sites on which these reconstructions were based demonstrates that they were not contemporary, which undermines the orthodox model. Chronological evidence indic…

Protocols for Organising Radiocarbon Dated Assemblages from New Zealand Archaeological Sites for Comparative Analysis
A set of protocols developed to organise radiocarbon dated archaeological assemblages from New Zealand in preparation for comparative analysis is presented. These concern sample selection and admissibility criteria, and a set of rules for using both 1σ and 2σ calibrated age ranges to assign assemblage dates to periods. Examples drawn from a comparative study currently being undertaken are used to illustrate application of the protocols, and brief…
