  • A soil Chronosequence on Lake Mega-Frome Beach Ridges and its Implications for Late Quaternary Pedogenesis and Paleoenvironmental Conditions in the Drylands of Southern Australia

    Open Access•J H May, Jan-Hendrik May et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

The terminal lake systems of central Australia are key sites for the reconstruction of late Quaternary paleoenvironments. Paleoshoreline deposits around these lakes reflect repeated lake filling episodes and such landforms have enabled the establishment of a luminescence-based chronology for filling events in previous studies. Here we present a detailed documentation of the morphology and chemistry of soils developed in four well-preserved beach …

  • Late-Holocene climatic variability indicated by three natural archives in arid southern Australia

    Open Access•Luke A Gliganic, Tim J Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 18

Three terrestrial climate proxies are used to investigate the evolution of Holocene palaeoenvironments in southern central Australia, all of which present a coherent record of palaeohydrology. Single-grain optically stimulated luminescence from sediments supplemented by 14 C from charcoal and lacustrine shells was obtained to date shoreline deposits (Lake Callabonna) and the adjacent Mt Chambers Creek alluvial fan. Our findings are complemented b…

  • Mind the gap: An absence of valley-fill deposits identifying the Holocene hypsithermal period of enhanced flow regime in southeastern Australia

    Open Access•Tim J Cohen, Gerald C Nanson•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 4

The Holocene sedimentary record in southeastern Australia is present in a range of landscape settings, such as upland swamps (dells), internally drained lake basins, alluvial fans, and mid-catchment and lowland floodplains. An assessment of the best-constrained basal radiocarbon dates in valley-fill locations between 30 and 42°S and upstream of last-glacial eustatic influences yields an intriguing pattern. The record for fluvial sites with catchm…

  • Torrents of Terror’: The August 1998 Storm and the Magnitude, Frequency and Impact of Major Floods in the Illawarra Region of New South Wales

    Open Access•Ivars Reinfields, Gerald C Nanson•ARTICLE•Australian Geographical Studies•2001•Cited by: 2

The Illawarra Region some 80 kilometres south of Sydney is characterised by a prominent coastal escarpment that rises to 700 m within 12 km of the coast and forms a locus for frequent, high intensity rainfall events. One of the most recent recorded events occurred on 17 August 1998 with rainfall intensities at several pluviometers exceeding 120 mm hr ‐1 over a duration of one hour, with up to 249 mm falling in 3.5 hours during the main storm burs…

  • Comparative Uranium-Thorium and Thermoluminescence Dating of Weathered Quaternary Alluvium in the Tropics of Northern Australia

    Open Access•Gerald C Nanson, David M Price et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1991

Thermoluminescence (TL) age determinations of alluvial sediments in the tropics are evaluated by comparison with U/Th age determinations of pedogenic accumulations in the alluvium of the lower Gilbert River, a large fan delta in the wet-dry tropics of northern Queensland, Australia. This study extends U/Th dating by applying it not only to calcretes, but also to Fe/Mn oxyhydroxide/oxide accumulations. While a direct correlation cannot be made bet…

  • Thermoluminescence chronology of late quaternary deposition on the riverine plain of South‐Eastern Australia

    K J Page, K L Page et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•1991•Cited by: 9•References: 11

Thermoluminescence (TL) dating of surficial deposits of the Riverine Plain of south‐eastern Australia has revealed a record of fluvial, aeolian and lacustrine deposition during the last 100,000 years (100Ka). At the end of the last interglacial the Plain was networked by low sinuosity, bedload‐dominated prior streams which declined in activity after about 85Ka. A subsequent phase of prior stream activity in the northern Murrumbidgee region dates …

  • Comparison of Thermoluminescence and Radiocarbon Age-Determinations from Late-Pleistocene Alluvial Deposits Near Sydney, Australia

    Open Access•Gerald C Nanson, R W Young•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1987

Radiocarbon and thermoluminescence (TL) age-determinations have been obtained for a large Pleistocene alluvial terrace on the Nepean River near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The deposit was laid down by a braided river system prior to the last glacial maximum. Six thoroughly pretreated samples of charcoal and degraded wood buried within gravels at the base of the terrace yielded apparent 14 C ages of ∼37,000–42,000 yr B.P. These compare fav…

  • Serious problems in using equations to estimate bedload yields for coastal rivers in NSW

    David S Hean, Gerald C Nanson•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•1987•References: 17

Bedload yields have been calculated using eight bedload equations at a total of 11 gauging sites in four coastal river basins in New South Wales. Comparisons of yields calculated by each equation at each site show enormous variations. Furthermore, on the Manning River, where calculations could be made on the four main tributaries and compared to those from the trunk channel below their combined confluence, there was no recognisable continuity of …

  • The West Dapto flood of February 1984: Rainfall characteristics and channel changes

    Gerald C Nanson, David Hean et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•1985•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This paper describes the distribution, magnitude and areal pattern of recurrence intervals for a very severe rainstorm centred over the West Dapto area of Wollongong in February 1984. It also examines the impact of this storm on the channel geometry of streams draining the Illawarra escarpment. The storm was the largest 24 hour rainfall ever recorded in temperate Australia, and was very likely in excess of the 200 year event for the Dapto area. H…

  • Terrace formation in the Illawarra region of New South Wales

    R W Young, Gerald C Nanson•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•1982•Cited by: 7•References: 13

The formation of river terraces is generally attributed to fluctuations in climate, sea level or tectonic activity. In this study we argue that they can form when critical thresholds intrinsic to an alluvial system are exceeded. This conclusion is drawn from a comparative study of ancient terrace deposits and modern floodplains, rather than from an attempt to fit terrace sequences into a climatic chronology. While climatic change cannot be ignore…
