    Open Access•Yihua Hong, Jeffrey A Rosen et al.•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•2025•References: 35

Personalization for academic and social-emotional learning (PASL) is a systemic approach to high school reform that works to strengthen and bridge preexisting academic and social-emotional systems within schools and classrooms. Analyzing student administrative records from 12 schools in a large Florida urban district, we found that, on average, PASL was associated with fewer unexcused absences of ninth graders. Its effects were stronger for stude…

  • Improvements in motor competence skills are associated with improvements in executive function and math problem-solving skills in early childhood

Michael T Willoughby, Kesha Hudson et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2021•Cited by: 1

Efforts to increase moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in school-age children are associated with improved health, cognitive, and academic outcomes. However, questions remain about whether similar benefits are observed in early childhood. We hypothesized that motor competence, not MVPA, would be related to improved cognitive and academic skill development in early childhood. For this study, 283 children were recruited from 13 community…

This article puts forth a multidimensional framework for empirically testing the effects of teacher mentoring, focusing on interactions between formal mentors and novice teachers and the setting in which these interactions occur. Analyzing survey and administrative data from Chicago Public Schools with a multilevel propensity-score weighting approach, our analyses identifies the combination of stronger leadership and high-quality mentoring that f…

  • Korean, Chinese, or what? Identity transformations of Chosŏnjok (Korean Chinese) migrant brides in South Korea

    Yihua Hong, C Song et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Ethnicity•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 5

Chosŏnjok migrant brides are Korean Chinese women who married South Korean men (hereafter Korean men). The number of Chosŏnjok migrant brides increased rapidly until recently due to the attempts of the central and local governments of Korea to resolve bride shortages in rural areas in the early 1990s and the Koreans' preference for ethnic Korean brides over non-Korean foreign brides. Currently there are more than 26,000 Chosŏnjok migrant brides i…
