On Resilience and Defiance of the Īlamtamil Resistance Movement in a Transnational Diaspora
In January 2010, the time-frame for achieving the ultimate aim conceptualised as external or internal self-determination, is envisaged as lying one or two generations ahead by Tamil speakers in the worldwide Diaspora. In some circles within the Movement a kind of Tamil worldly Zionism is developed not very far from Theodor Herzl's. This Diaspora, guided by a provisional transnational Government or another form of self-chosen governance, sees itse…
Caivam - a religion among Tamil speaking refugees from Sri Lanka
Caivam (Shaivism, Shivaism) is what gives Tamil speaking refugees from Sri Lanka in India and in Western countries their psychological and emotional sustenance, allows them a connection with their culture and traditions and the ability to resist assimilation and create a separate ethnic identity while giving them the strength to deal with the loss of their rightful place in their own country. A Tamil speaking refugee is a political refugee who as…

It deals with the extent of reversal and re-reversal in the course of the conflict and reconciliation respectively. These values are reversed through political decisions in a martial situat…

Approximisation refers to milieu/space and synchronisation to time. Such approximation/synchronisation requires a special mode of expression, which makes the replacement of room and the reversal of time plausible to the spectator. This mode of expression is myth/ritual or theatre, or both. Here we face both. We face the imitation of an original symbolic act, the handing over of sovereignty, but on a theatre-like stage, the "Court" around the pres…
Ilavar and Lankans, Emerging Identities in a Fragmented Island
This paper starts with a reference to the Vattukottai Resolution in 1976 as indicator of the de facto fragmentation of Ceylon (Lanka) into two peoples, the Ilavar and Lankans. The two concepts are defined. The concept of 'unitary' as separate from 'united' is also analysed. The last section describes the symbol production of the concept of unity. As an alternative to the concept of unity, cooperation is suggested

"The Vallipuram Buddha Image "Rediscovered
When, at the end of the 19th century, the Visnu kovil in Vallipuram, in Vatamaracci, in northern Ilam (Lanka) was (re)built, a Buddha statue was unearthed close to this temple, 50 yardsnortheast of it. It remained in the lumber room of this temple until 1902, when it was set up in Old Park at Yalppanam under a bo-tree. In 1906, the Vallipuram Buddha image was presented by Governor Sir Henry Blake to the King of Siam, who was particularly anxious …
