Becoming citizens: Policy feedback and the transformation of the Thai rice farmer
Leadership, trust, proximity to government, and community-based enterprise development in rural Thailand
This article examines the relation between leadership, government, trust, and how community-based enterprises (CBEs) access markets. It argues that leadership styles, the relation with the government, and level of trust among members and networks lead to different patterns of market access of local community enterprises. Conducting field research and in-depth interviews with CBEs in northeastern, central, and southern Thailand, it was found that …
Inequality in Rice Farmers’ Access to a Government Assistance Program in Rural Thailand
The government of Thailand attempts to alleviate rice farmers’ poverty through several public programs. One of the government's assistance programs is support for rice production. The “1,000 baht per rai program” aims to redistribute public money to help poor rice farmers reduce their production and cultivation costs. In implementation, however, this program suffers from inequality in granting access to the government's assistance program. This p…

Democracy, Trade Openness, and Agricultural Trade Policy in Southeast Asian Countries
This paper examines the relation between trade, political openness, and agricultural trade policy in developing countries. It argues that trade openness and democracy contribute to lower taxes and control programs in the agricultural sectors. Examining the politics of agricultural trade policy in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand, it was found that trade expansion and democratic regimes lead to fewer taxes and control programs im…
Political Liberalization and Agricultural Trade Policy in Indonesia and the Philippines
The political regimes in Indonesia and the Philippines have experienced a political transition—from an authoritarian to an electoral system. Such a transition has contributed to changes in the policy-making process, including agricultural trade policy. Unfortunately, few scholars have empirically examined the impact of this political transition on the policy-making process. This article aims to fill this gap by examining the causal relations betw…
