Recognition and Japan’s Post-coup Diplomacy in Myanmar and Afghanistan
How does Japan diplomatically engage with post-coup countries? Officially, it does not maintain diplomatic relations. Unofficially, however, Japan conducts a vibrant post-coup diplomacy. Probing different forms of recognition, this article investigates how Japan manages its diplomacy with countries where illiberal, military governments have violently assumed power. Since the military government’s coup in Myanmar in 2021, Japan has adapted its pol…
Methods of economic statecraft
This article develops a comprehensive typology of economic statecraft methods that contributes to a deeper understanding of how states wield power in the 21st century. Despite extensive scholarships on economic statecraft and geoeconomics, existing frameworks lack a unified structure that captures the full range of methods available to states. We propose a novel typology that distinguishes between two dimensions – statecraft venues (domestic, bil…

A European equivalence scale for public in-kind transfers
This paper introduces a theory-based equivalence scale for public in-kind transfers, which justifies comparison of distributions of extended income (cash income plus the value of public services) between European countries. We demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed equivalence scale in an empirical analysis of the effects of public health care, long-term care, education and childcare expenditure on estimates of income inequality and poverty f…
Explaining important public contests in Japan
This article studies two of the most important public contests in contemporary Japanese politics, Prime Minister (PM) Koizumi’s postal privatization and PM Abe’s introduction of collective self-defense. I investigate the rhetorical dynamics of these public contests, and find that the initiations and the yearlong continued efforts by the prime ministers and their cabinets narrowed down the options for resistance in Japanese political networks, as …
WIN-WIN! with ODA-man
Official development assistance (ODA) constitutes one of Japan’s most important foreign policy instruments as it builds Japan’s global network and supports allies in the Southeast Asian region and beyond. In the context of a rising China and an increasingly severe fiscal and demographic situation at home, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) promulgated a domestic-oriented legitimation campaign featuring a popular anime character rebranded as ‘…
Increasing Income Inequality in the Nordics
We provide an overview of inequality developments in the Nordics compared to other OECD countries, starting from the early 1990s. Some of the largest inequality increases in the OECD have taken place in Sweden, Finland and Denmark, but from very low initial levels. A coherent set of institutions underpin high employment and have likely dampened the inequality-increasing forces from skill-biased technological change and globalisation. Demographic …
Advancing the Role of Social Mechanisms, Mediators, and Moderators in Securitization Theory
In this article, I further develop the Copenhagen School’s securitization theory in a causal direction, by emphasizing the explanatory family of mechanisms, mediators and moderators. In the first half of this article, I present two models for conceptualizing the causal maps that securitization is part of. Next, I define five epistemological and methodological dimensions that are important for modelling securitization with causal power. The propos…

The Duty of Care for Citizens Abroad
This article analyses the state’s duty of care (DoC) for citizens who fall victim to unforeseen catastrophic or violent events abroad. The DoC highlights the challenges, dynamics and relations involved in diplomatic practice that is aimed at protecting citizens outside of state borders and where traditional security concepts have little relevance. How has a globalized, more insecure world — with shifting relations and responsibilities among state…
China and Nordic Diplomacy
Identity Politics and the East China Sea
This article contributes to the relational IR literature on identity politics and Sino‐Japanese relations. Theoretically, we develop Rumelili's framework for studying modes of differentiation by incorporating the sectoral characteristics of key discourse signs. Empirically, we apply this framework to the construction of Self and Other in the official Japanese security discourse regarding the Senkaku Islands dispute from 2010–2014, a period of dis…

Developing Japanese Populism Research through Readings Of European Populist Radical Right Studies
Former Prime Minister Koizumi's surprising victory within the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in 2001 and his subsequent popularity as prime minister led to increased interest in the study of populism in Japan. In addition to Ōtake Hideo's prominent contributions, several others have also employed populism as a prism to study Japanese politics. Compared to the major debates on populism and particularly on the populist radical right (PRR) in Wester…
Coming into the cold
In their Arctic strategy documents, the five Arctic coastal states (Canada, Greenland/Denmark, Norway, Russia, and the USA) all point to increased traffic and regional activity as a promising economic possibility and a security and governance challenge. These developments have not gone unnoticed by non-Arctic states who have demonstrated an increasing interest in the region, most noticeably through their successful applications to gain permanent …
