  • Social Movements and Climate Adaptation: The Provincial Politics of Coastal Reclamation in Indonesia

    Open Access•Ryan Tans•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Politics•2024•References: 11

Anti-reclamation movements are common in Indonesia, but their effectiveness varies. Such movements, which oppose the infilling of coastal waters and wetlands, consistently draw support from environmentalists, fisherfolk, and coastal residents. To succeed, however, they must transcend these constituencies and mobilize broad coalitions. In this paper, I apply the concept of political opportunity to explain variation in the ability of anti-reclamati…

  • Technology is a wish your heart makes: How Disney harnesses practical magic discourse to legitimize MyMagic

    Open Access•Kelley Cotter, Priya Kumar et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2024•References: 6

This article explores how Disney employs magical discourse to legitimize its MyMagic+ system. Through an analysis of the Disney Parks blog, we introduce the concept practical magic discourse , which entices users to indulge in the fantasy of transcending the constraints of reality, while obscuring the labor involved in the system’s development and maintenance. • Coastal reclamation and Balinese identity

    Open Access•Ryan Tans•ARTICLE•Asian Politics & Policy•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 14

The proposed reclamation of Benoa Bay triggered huge demonstrations that rejected the project in the name of Balinese identity. Yet, the politicization of identity seems ill‐suited to an anti‐reclamation movement, because the location‐specific costs of reclamation encourage local, not regional, resistance. The politicization of identity likewise has few precedents in Bali's own history, where politics usually revolves around class, caste, and reg…

    Open Access•Ryan Tans•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Studies•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 20

This article argues that weak local governments increase levels of taxation by “borrowing” institutional capacity from certain types of businesses. While many businesses lobby against taxation, businesses that are locally owned, nationally connected, and logistically complex build robust associations that support taxation. These types of businesses benefit from improvements in public infrastructure, so they empower their associations to monitor m…

  • Property-Price Determinants in Indonesia

Matthew Gnagey, Ryan Tans•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Indonesian Economic…•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 45

Price formation provides critical insights into the attributes of fledgling property markets in developing countries. This article investigates asking-price formation across the Indonesian archipelago, including previously unstudied regional property markets. We compile a rich micro dataset of asking prices for residential, commercial, and undeveloped land from a nationwide classifieds database. Through a hedonic price analysis we identify the im…
