  • Marshill Rockshelter (Eastern Cape, South Africa): A new late Pleistocene and Holocene archaeological sequence in the Maloti-Drakensberg piedmont

Paloma De La Peña, Mari Carmen Arriaza et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2026•References: 76

This paper reports on a new archaeological research project in the Stormberg region of South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province that began in 2018. After four prospecting surveys, an archaeological site — Marshill Rockshelter — was selected that could offer a long diachronic chronostratigraphic framework from the late Pleistocene to the Holocene in order to understand the deep past of this region and the long-term occupation of a mountain environment…

  • Continuity and Transition from the Early to Mid-Holocene at the Foothills of the Drakensberg: Preliminary Results from the Current Excavations of Strathalan Cave A, North-Eastern Cape, South Africa

    Open Access•Jerome P Reynard, Tanya Hattingh et al.•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2025•References: 74

The foothills of the Drakensberg are a significant region in understanding the links between environmental conditions and the spread of social networks across southern Africa. Strathalan Cave is an important site in this region yielding an extensive Holocene-aged deposit. Here, we report on the preliminary results from the ongoing excavations of Strathalan Cave A. Radiocarbon dates place the occupations between c. 5500 and 9000 yrs cal. BP with m…

  • Equating language, genes and subsistence? The appearance of herding in southern Africa

    Iris Guillemard•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 69

The combined use of linguistic, genetic and archaeological studies for establishing migration models is common in southern African research on pastoralism. According to some of these models, sheep would have diffused with Khoe-speaking people through southern Africa from around 2000 years ago. In the literature, ‘Khoe people’ and ‘herders’ or ‘pastoralists’ are often used as synonyms. Many implications follow from this and cast a shadow on the hi…
