  • Magnetic and GPR surveys in Metsamor, Argištiḫinili and Zvartnost on the Ararat Plain, Armenia

Open Access•Maksym Mackiewicz, Mateusz Iskra et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2025•References: 1

Preliminary geophysical survey on the Ararat Plain revealed insights into three sites, Magnetic surveys mapped burial structures in Metsamor's necropolis, GPR detected settlement structures at Argištiḫinili and Zvartnots

  • A Mismatched Piece in a Cultural Middle Stone Age Puzzle

Open Access•Grzegorz Michalec, Eric Andrieux et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 86

This article presents the results of research carried out at two previously unreported Eastern Desert Atbara River project (EDAR) Middle Stone Age (MSA) sites—EDAR 134 and EDAR 155. Luminescence dating results indicate human activity in this area during the Marine Isotope Stage 5 period (MIS 5), approximately 90 kya. Discussion concerning the affiliation of both analyzed inventories will be provided, including another MSA site from the EDAR area,…

  • The Middle Stone Age in the Eastern Desert. Edar 135 — a buried early MIS 5 horizon from Sudan

Open Access•Maciej Ehlert, Ju Yong Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 57

Middle Stone Age (MSA) lithic artefacts coming from dated layers preserved in their original stratigraphic position are still rare in Northeast Africa in general and in Sudan in particular. This paper aims to present the results of technological and functional analyses of an assemblage coming from a stratigraphic context, i.e. the upper level of the EDAR (Eastern Desert – Atbara River) 135 site, discovered in an abandoned gold mining pit in the S…

  • A Window into the Early–Middle Stone Age Transition in Northeastern Africa—A Marine Isotope Stage 7a/6 Late Acheulean Horizon from the Edar 135 Site, Eastern Sahara (Sudan)

Open Access•Grzegorz Michalec, Marzena Cendrowska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 8•References: 48

This paper presents the results of the analysis of a late Acheulean horizon from the EDAR 135 site, which was discovered in the Eastern Desert, Sudan, in an area heavily transformed by modern mining activity. A lithic assemblage was discovered there, within a layer of gravel sediments formed by a paleostream in a humid period of the Middle Pleistocene. This layer is OSL dated between 220 12 and 145 20 ka (MIS 7a/6). These dates indicate that the …

  • Gold Miners on the Trail of the Earliest Humans in Eastern Saharan Africa. Investigating the Acheulean and Middle Stone Age in Sudanese Nubia

Open Access•Mirosław Masojć, Ahmed Nassr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 8•References: 13

This research note presents evidence for the oldest Middle Pleistocene Eastern Saharan human activity from the area referred to as the Eastern Desert Atbara River ( EDAR ), Sudan, which is currently threatened by gold mining. Preliminary results of multifaceted analyses indicate the activity of Homo sapiens during MIS 5 as well as Homo erectus during MIS 7–11 or earlier

  • Earthen mounds in the Głubczyce Forest (SW Poland) – are they prehistoric long-barrows? Geoarchaeology of the Silesian soil record and human-environment interplay in the Holocene

Mateusz Krupski, Maksym Mackiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2021•Cited by: 4

Two earthen mounds, trapezoid in shape, oriented along the W-E/NW-SE axis and located in prominent landscape positions, were recently discovered in the Głubczyce Forest in the loess area of the Głubczyce Plateau (SW Poland). Their resemblance to long-barrows of the Funnel Beaker culture, as yet unknown in this part of Silesia prompted low-invasive research, involving ALS data analysis, magnetic prospection and a study of soil properties. The obje…
