A Machine Learning Approach to Preferential Attachment and Status Advantage in a Hip-Hop Collaboration Network
Status is central to understanding collaborative behavior, yet it is often difficult to measure in cultural fields where perceived standings are only partially observable. This study develops a scalable supervised machine learning approach to infer directed deference in collaboration networks using a partially observed status hierarchy derived from a ritualized site of status conferral (a televised competition series). Drawing on a longitudinal “…
Social Influence in the Public Expression of LGBTQ+ Support
With the growing acceptance of diverse sexual orientations, displaying rainbow flags has become a widespread urban practice, symbolizing solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. What motivates individuals to publicly express support for the rights of sexual minorities beyond private approval? The authors explore whether social exposure among flat neighbors contributes to the public display of rainbow flags on private windows and balconies by conduct…
Complex Contagion in Social Networks
Complex contagion rests on the idea that individuals are more likely to adopt a behavior if they experience social reinforcement from multiple sources. We develop a test for complex contagion, conceptualized as social reinforcement, and then use it to examine whether empirical data from a country-scale randomized controlled viral marketing field experiment show evidence of complex contagion. The experiment uses a peer encouragement design in whic…
Fragmentation Further Entrenched?—Sustainability Chapters in Trade Agreements and Their Systemic Implications
The emerging “sustainability” initiative in the global community represents continuing efforts at various levels to upgrade and modernize trade agreements so that they can cater to the new demands of contracting parties and various interest groups. Such modernization and upgrades will help increase the legitimacy and relevance of trade agreements at this crucial juncture of a global poly-crisis. The new initiative is also expected to help facilit…
Expansion, cohesion and diversity
Social network approaches on microfinance self‐help groups (SHGs) find that their organizational capacity lies in network expansion—a social capital basis for various policy interventions through SHGs. To what extent do SHGs create connections in and out of the group boundaries in the caste‐ and gender‐segregated India? This study adds group cohesion and contact diversity as potential network advantages and fully assesses the relationship‐spannin…

The trade policy response to Covid-19 and its implications for international business
Purpose This paper aims to explore trade policy measures taken in response to COVID-19 and analyses in detail their extent and nature. It assesses their compatibility with World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreements: specifically, whether they were necessary and justifiable efforts to protect the security and health of populations and asks how this widespread recourse to trade barriers may impact on international business? Design/methodology/approa…
The “Indirect Support” Loophole in the New SOE Norms
Recent trade agreements contain new norms on SOEs which set forth detailed provisions to regulate a wide range of activities of contracting parties’ governments and their SOEs. Given the increasing global attention to the operation of SOEs in international trade and investment, and their significant influence, the new norms provide important legal guidance and a useful platform for future discussions in this area. These new norms include: restric…
Social inequality and access to social capital in microfinance interventions
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the inequality perpetuated through social categories in accessing the social capital generated through the microfinance interventions in India as the country has pronounced economic inequality by social categories like many developing stratified societies. Design/methodology/approach The study uses survey data collected from 75 villages in rural India and tests whether the formation and …
Exposure to opposing views on social media can increase political polarization
Significance Social media sites are often blamed for exacerbating political polarization by creating “echo chambers” that prevent people from being exposed to information that contradicts their preexisting beliefs. We conducted a field experiment that offered a large group of Democrats and Republicans financial compensation to follow bots that retweeted messages by elected officials and opinion leaders with opposing political views. Republican pa…

Competition law is one of the most rapidly developing areas of law in Korea, and has seen dramatic developments over the past decade. The most recent change came in 2002, when the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) undertook to achieve its goal of enhancing economic efficiency and consumer welfare by promoting and eliminating certain behaviors that hinder competition in the market. The KFTC is a ministerial-level central administrative organizati…
