Food and Labour under Imperial Rule: Unravelling the Food Landscape of Transplanted Workers (mitmaqkuna) in the Inka Empire
The Inka empire's expansion incorporated diverse cultural and ecological elements in microcosmic representations of their empire. Imperial practices included the resettlement of communities from various regions into labour enclaves near Inka ceremonial, administrative and economic hubs. This degree of imperial control might suggest a limitation on Inka subjects’ freedom to integrate non-local food resources into their diets. Employing starch grai…

Starch grains on human teeth as evidence for 4000 BCE potato consumption at the Cruz Verde site, northern coast of Peru
Comment on “Shark fisheries during the second millennium BC in Gramalote, north coast of Peru”
In reporting on prehistoric specialized shark fisheries at the Initial Period site of \nGramalote (~1500–1200 cal BCE) on the north coast of Peru, Prieto suggests that \nsubstantial quantities of sharks were captured by using shell rattles to attract and \nfiber nooses to capture them from small reed boats. Although his research has \nmade a significant contribution to our understanding of prehistoric fishing \nindustries, based on data from earl…
Osteometric and isotopic (δ13C and δ15N) evidence of Pre-Hispanic camelid-herd breeding in Moche site of “Huaca de la Luna” (North coast of Peru)
Starch grain evidence of potato consumption at the Late Moche (AD 600–850) site of Wasi Huachuma, Peru
A late pleistocene human presence at Huaca Prieta, Peru, and early Pacific Coastal adaptations
Archaeological excavations in deep pre-mound levels at Huaca Prieta in northern Peru have yielded new evidence of late Pleistocene cultural deposits that shed insights into the early human occupation of the Pacific coast of South America. Radiocarbon dates place this occupation between ~ 14,200 and 13,300 cal yr BP. The cultural evidence shares certain basic technological and subsistence traits, including maritime resources and simple flake tools…
Chronology, mound-building and environment at Huaca Prieta, coastal Peru, from 13 700 to 4000 years ago
Renewed in-depth multi-disciplinary investigation of a large coastal mound settlement in Peru has extended the occupation back more than 7000 years to a first human exploitation ~13720 BP. Research by the authors has chronicled the prehistoric sequence from the activities of the first maritime foragers to the construction of the black mound and the introduction of horticulture and monumentality. The community of Huaca Prieta emerges as innovative…
Mortuary Practices and Human Sacrifice in the Middle Chao Valley of Peru: Their Interpretation in the Context of Andean Mortuary Patterning
Investigations at several northern Peruvian coastal archaeological sites by archaeologists and physical anthropologists are beginning to provide details on long-term patterning of mortuary behavior. Some of these patterns include retainer sacrifice, child sacrifice, and the metaphorical principle we refer to as "like with like." In this paper, we discuss the data relating to these mortuary patterns discovered at the site of Santa Rita B in the mi…
