  • Production Function Estimation With Resource Misallocation

Open Access•Shigang Li, Jiawei Mo•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2026

We show that the proxy variable method fails to yield consistent estimates of production function coefficients in the presence of resource misallocation. This failure arises because unobserved firm‐specific distortions violate the assumptions of scalar unobservability and strict monotonicity. We propose a novel identification strategy that does not rely on these assumptions. Our method is robust to various distortions and production function spec…

  • Trade openness and human capital allocation

    Open Access•Shigang Li, Zefeng Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•China Economic Quarterly…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This paper investigates the impacts of trade openness on the allocation of human capital between public sector and private sector. Using a matched dataset of the 1% survey of China's population in 2005 and other city-level data, we find that individuals who reside in cities with higher degrees of trade openness are less likely to work in public sector, and this effect increases with educational attainment. We then employ a difference-in-differenc…

  • Does VAT retention rate affect firms’ capacity utilization? Evidence from China

Open Access•Longjian Yang, Shigang Li et al.•ARTICLE•China Economic Quarterly…•2021•References: 8

Value-added tax (VAT) is shared between central and local governments, and is levied based on firms' production location, which provides incentives for local governments to intervene in firms' production. This paper investigates how local governments' VAT retention rate affect firms' capacity utilization theoretically and empirically. We find that the more VAT retained by local governments', the lower the firm's capacity utilization. Our findings…
