Quantifying Wildfire Heavy-Dense Smoke’s Persistent Effects on PM 2.5 Speciation across U.S. Regions: Evidence from 2007 to 2023 Smoke Events
Wildfire smoke substantially degrades air quality by increasing total PM2.5 concentrations and altering their chemical speciation. Although existing research has documented PM2.5 during active fires, the spatiotemporal persistence of these pollutants across U.S. regions remains insufficiently quantified. Leveraging quasi-experimental variation arising from 2007 to 2023 wildfire smoke events, we employ difference-in-differences (DID) and event stu…
Augmented Reality in Higher Education: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Literature from 2000 to 2023
Augmented reality (AR) has been widely used in higher education because of its unique characteristics that combine virtuality and reality. This study systematically reviewed the literature on the application of AR in higher education between 2000 and 2023. A total of 237 articles were selected, and the key research findings were analyzed and synthesized based on the coding manual from five aspects: basic information, disciplines, technology featu…
Local Protectionism and Firms' ESG Choices: Evidence From the Judicial Independence Reform
Local protectionism has been closely linked to corporate behavior. This paper exploits quasi‐experimental variation from the elimination of local protectionism through China's 2014 judicial reform to examine its impact on firms' Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosure. The results show that the reform increases ESG disclosure scores for treated firms, particularly city‐level state‐owned enterprises. A potential mechanism is the inc…
Elite Capture or Exclusion? Insights From China's Targeted Poverty Alleviation Strategy
This paper investigates the role of political elites in China's Targeted Poverty Alleviation (TPA) program using data from the 2017 Thousand‐Person Hundred‐Village (TPHV) survey. The findings reveal a negative correlation between a household's political elite status and its registration in TPA. This exclusion is probably not due to ineligibility but rather to a deliberate selection process aimed at limiting elite influence. Additionally, higher‐l…
The Impact of Fiscal Inequality on Economic Growth: Evidence from Shifts in China's Fiscal System
This paper examines how fiscal inequality affects regional economic growth in China through two fiscal systems using an event-study approach. The »event« is the 1994 taxsharing reform that transitioned from the Fiscal Responsibility System (1987-1993) to the Tax Sharing System (1994-present). It presents three primary findings: Firstly, fiscal inequality positively impacts economic growth before 1994, but the effects become negative, albeit close…
Rent-tax substitution and its impact on firms: Evidence from housing purchase limits policy in China
Effect of public expenditure on fertility intention to have a second child or more: Evidence from China's CGSS survey data
Local judicial system reform and corporate investment: Evidence from unified management of local courts below the province
Using the policy of unified management of local courts below the province, we found that the independence of the judiciary can significantly improve the success rate of firms in administrative litigation cases, promoting the corporate fixed assets investment rate. The positive influence of reform of local judicial system on private firms is more significant than that on state-owned enterprises. Mechanism analysis shows that the reform of local ju…
