  • Comparative Anatomy of the Insect Tracheal System Part 1

Open Access•Hollister W Herhold, Steven R Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Museum…•2023

A broad comparative study of insect respiratory morphology is presented. Tracheae, epidermal invaginations extending into the body in branching networks of tubes, supply tissues with direct access to air for gas exchange. While previous tracheal studies focused on a handful of taxa and lacked in consistency, here a unified system of tracheal nomenclature is established using visualizations from micro-CT scanning of representatives from apterygote…

  • The Weevil Rostrum (Coleoptera

    Open Access•Steven R Davis•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Museum…•2017

The current classification of weevils has witnessed vast improvements at higher phylogenetic levels, though much remains unstable at the lower levels. In order to develop a more robust morphological character system for cladistic analysis of the higher lineages and to gain a comprehensive understanding of the structure of a hallmark feature of weevils, a comparative study was conducted of rostra throughout Curculionoidea. Semithin sections were m…

  • The Environmental Context and Function of Burnt-Mounds

    Open Access•Antony G Brown, Antony Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 16

Burnt mounds, or fulachtaí fiadh as they are known in Ireland, are probably the most common prehistoric site type in Ireland and Britain. Typically Middle–Late Bronze Age in age (although both earlier and later examples are known), they are artefact-poor and rarely associated with settlements. The function of these sites has been much debated with the most commonly cited uses being for cooking, as steam baths or saunas, for brewing, tanning, or t…
