Chronic Care in Primary Care
The role of General Practice Pharmacists (GPPs) has expanded in response to increasing demands on primary care services, particularly in managing chronic conditions. While GPPs are recognised for their contributions to medication optimisation and patient care, challenges such as role clarity, workload pressures, and confidence in clinical decision-making remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate the tasks, professional identity, confid…

Bringing Them All Back Home
This article engages with recent attempts to bridge the apparent divide between disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) and transitional justice, and their implications for post-conflict environments characterized by large-scale displacement. Much of the literature on technical, institutional remedies to better coordinate DDR and transitional justice and respond effectively to displacement overlooks a series of theoretical and empiric…
The public health response to the re-emergence of syphilis in Wales, UK
During the 1990s, cases of infectious syphilis were uncommon in Wales. In 2002, an outbreak occurred in a sexual network of men who have sex with men (MSM) attending a sauna. A multidisciplinary outbreak control team was convened to raise awareness of the outbreak among MSM and health professionals, assess the extent of outbreak, and initiate surveillance measures. It is likely that early intensive control efforts dampened the epidemic curve. How…
Aspects, Guises, Species, and Knowing Something to Be Good
According to the guise of the good thesis, everything wanted is wanted under the aspect of some good. The truth of this thesis is a matter of controversy. But what hangs on this controversy? The point of the chapter is to question the need to settle whether the guise of the good thesis is true. I argue that guises of the good are many, not one, and that they matter because they promise to yield a viable account of how we know of something that it…

Kantian Morals and Humean Motives
The idea that moral imperatives are categorical is commonly used to support internalist claims about moral judgment. I argue that the categorical quality of moral requirements shows at most that moral motivation need not flow from a background desire to be moral. It does not show that moral judgments can motivate by themselves, or that amoralism is impossible

Re-emerging syphilis in gay men
ver the later half of the 20th century levels of syphilis dropped dramatically in western European countries. Between 1990 and 1998, an area such as Greater Manchester in the UK (population, 2.7 million) reported fewer than 10 cases per year. In contrast, between January 1999 and May 2001 120 cases of syphilis were reported in Greater Manchester. Other areas within the UK (Brighton, Peterborough and Cambridgeshire), elsewhere in Europe (Dublin an…
The Action as Conclusion
On the question of the conclusion of a piece of practical reasoning, few have been willing to follow Aristotle's lead. He said the conclusion was an action. These days, the conclusion is usually described either as a proposition about what one ought to do, or as a psychological state or event, such as a decision to do something, an intention to do something, or a belief about what one ought to do. Why favor these options over the action-as-conclu…
What Goes without Saying in Metaethics
Reflection on the nature of practical thought has led some philosophers to hold that some beliefs have a necessary influence on the will. Reflection on the nature of motivational explanation has led other philosophers to say that no belief can motivate without the assistance of a background desire. An assumption common to both groups of philosophers is that these views cannot be combined. Agreement on this assumption is so deep that it is taken a…

Fetal and infant growth and impaired glucose tolerance at age 64.
OBJECTIVE: To discover whether reduced fetal and infant growth is associated with non-insulin dependent diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance in adult life. DESIGN: Follow up study of men born during 1920-30 whose birth weights and weights at 1 year were known. SETTING: Hertfordshire, England. SUBJECTS: 468 men born in east Hertfordshire and still living there. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Fasting plasma glucose, insulin, proinsulin, and 32-33 split …
Lung function in an Australian population
A study of lung function in 203 twin pairs aged 18-34 years living in Sydney detected significant genetic variation in females and males. There was no evidence of family environmental effects in either sex and most of the repeatable variation in females was heritable. However, there was evidence for systematic environmental differences between males affecting lung function so that the heritability was lower in males (about 0.6) than females (abou…
A twin study of skin reflectance
Skin colour has been measured by reflectance spectrophotometry on 134 pairs of twins at three sites, forehead, forearm and upper arm, each at three wavelengths, 425, 545 and 685 nm. Tanning is measured most reliably at 685 nm and at this wavelength the heritability is high at the least exposed upper arm site, intermediate on the forearm, while on the forehead variation is entirely environmentally determined. The same gradient is observed, through…
