Women’s rights organizations and Turkish state in the post-2011 era: Ideological disengagement versus conservative alignment
In this article, we aim to explore the shift in the relationship between the state and women’s rights organizations (WROs) in Turkey in the post-2011 period, which was evinced in rising tensions between gender equality and gender complementarity discourses. We argue that, in the process of the vernacularization of global and/or international gender norms in Turkey, the conservative gender policy of the government corresponded to the endorsement o…

The article displays the symbolism underlying anti-communist discourse by re-reading the propaganda material as texts that introduce the reader to ultimate anti-communist fantasies. The analyzed texts were mainly produced by one of the leading par…

A central focus of the article is the historical project to create a new class of legal professionals, particularly attorneys, as an exemplary case for the interaction between law, ideology and modernization. Firstly, it is argued…
Domesticated Souls: Vâlâ Nureddin (Vâ‐Nû) on Womanhood
This study focuses on the treatment of women and the construction of female identity in the works of Vâlâ Nureddin (Vâ‐Nû) (1901–1967), a Turkish journalist and author. A reinterpretation of his works is critical in the sense that they have the potential to provide the reader with necessary knowledge concerning the roots of the unequal status of women in contemporary Turkey. The major argument of this study is that Vâ‐Nû appears to represent the …

This article analyses the implications for centre-right politics and democracy in Turkey of the rise to power of the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP) in the November 2002 general election. It is argued that the AKP has both similarities with and differences from the centre-right political parties that have dominated Turkish politics in the aftermath of the 1980 coup d'état. It is possible to find continuity in the c…
