  • European unemployment insurance. From undercurrent to paradigm shift

    Open Access•László Andor•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2022

The need for the European Union to get involved in unemployment insurance has frequently been debated in the past decade, starting from exploratory discussions and eventually becoming a political commitment by the European Commission President. This article looks back at the origins of the idea of an EU-level unemployment benefit scheme and explains the political dynamics of the concept’s evolution. Following the 2009 Great Recession and the subs…

  • The EU from crisis to crisis

    Open Access•László Andor•ARTICLE•Constellations•2020•References: 3

Social Democracy in Europe has been on the decline: some parties are experiencing an erosion of support while others have simply collapsed at some point. While the creation of the particular economic model of the European Union (EU) has historically relied on Social Democratic inputs, the functioning of the EU, and especially its lack of resilience at the time of the great financial and economic crisis, undermined support for progressives in vari…

  • EU policy and Roma integration (2010–14)

László Andor•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty and Social…•2018

This paper provides an overview of EU policies, initiatives and activities from the 2010–14 period in the area of Roma inclusion. The intention is to take stock of the evolution of EU engagement in Roma integration policies and related debates within one policy cycle, highlight the main policy objectives and tools, and draw some lessons as well. The content is largely based on the personal experience of the author and some related press coverage

  • Debts, crises and competitiveness

    Open Access•László Andor, Tamás Pesuth•ARTICLE•Society and Economy•2018

In this interview, Ángel Gurría looks back at a decade of financial and economic crisis and draws conclusions for macroeconomic policy. What concerns the European Economic and Monetary Union, he stresses the need to further improve the shock absorption capacity of the single currency. He insists that the OECD remains committed to going beyond GDP, and this is particularly relevant at a time when a new Jobs Strategy is being developed. He also hig…

  • Hungary in the Financial Crisis

László Andor, László Andor1•ARTICLE•Debatte Journal of Contemporary…•2009•Cited by: 4

This article examines the impact of the recent global financial crisis on Hungary and uses this analysis to draw conclusions about Hungarian economic policy and performance over the last decade. The point at issue is that of why Hungary has shown such vulnerability to global developments and has been forced to obtain external support from the IMF. Conventional explanations for this vulnerability are reviewed and it is noted that such explanations…

  • Usurping Social Policy

Open Access•Richard Phillips, Jeffrey Henderson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Policy•2006•Cited by: 3

This paper takes issue with arguments emanating from the global social policy literature that neoliberal policy agendas have been largely a consequence of the interplay of international agencies with indigenous reform interests. While relevant, such arguments grasp only part of the story of social policy change. By means of a case study of Hungary between 1990 and 2002, this article emphasises the role played by the bureaucratic reconstitution of…
