When health meets politics
The power of ‘big brothers’
Various perspectives have been proposed to explain regime change under authoritarianism, yet the role of autocrats— ‘the elephant in the room’— remains largely unexamined in large- N studies. This study addresses this gap by employing the Randomization Inference method that reshuffles historical leadership sequences as counterfactuals. Analyzing data from 150 countries between 1946 and 2020, we find strong evidence that autocrats contribute subst…
The Rule of Discourse
Double trouble? Effects of social conflict and foreign investment on consultative authoritarianism in China
It remains contested whether Chinese public consultation practices can be called local deliberative democracy or a sort of consultative authoritarianism. Yet, these different evaluations lack an appreciation of regional variations as well as underlying drivers. This study fills this gap by developing a political economy approach and constructing panel data of 36 Chinese cities over 12 years. Our study reveals that the functional purpose of appeas…
The Association between Home Healthcare and Burdensome Transitions at the End-of-Life in People with Dementia
HHC has differential effects on early and late transitions. Characteristics of HHC such as better continuity or interdisciplinary coordination may reduce the risk of transitions at the end-of-life. We need further studies to understand the longitudinal effects of HHC and its synergy with palliative care, as well as the key components of HHC that achieve better end-of-life outcomes
Encountering Dissimilar Views in Deliberation
Conversing with diverse points of view stands as the central tenet of deliberative democracy, yet empirical evidence has suggested mixed outcomes related to perspective change as a result of deliberative encounters. I propose a difference‐driven model that suggests individual predispositions moderate the processing of dissimilar views when changing policy preferences. My analysis is based on a random sample of over 400 voters at a California‐wide…
Political elites in deliberative democracy
Political leaders and elites play an enormous role in shaping a country's political development. Participatory and deliberative governance represents a major trend of political development around the world; while many studies focus on the ordinary people involved in public deliberation, little is known about the roles elites play in facilitating or impeding the progress of this deliberation. Utilizing a new survey on Chinese officials, we offer t…
