Olimpiadi e contestazione
Italy’s foreign policy and the search for a global role
The aim of this article is, therefore, to analyse the renewed global outlook of Italian foreign policy from the perspective of Italy’s evolving role conception and external projection. While the goal is to assess whether it is meaningful to speak of Italy’s pursuit of a global role, and how such a role should be conceptualized, we also explore a number of related issues, such as the domestic political context and the international systems within …
The Long‐Term Effects of Populism on Foreign Policy
What are the long‐term effects of populism on foreign policy? This aspect has not been addressed yet by the burgeoning literature on the international consequences of populism. In this contribution, we hypothesise that the two distinctive features of populist foreign policy‐making, mobilisation/politicisation and personalisation/centralisation, leave a long‐term imprint on foreign policy. We carry out a first plausibility probe of our hypotheses …
Olympic Diplomacy as Contestation
What Stuart Murray defines as “the dark side” of the relationship between sport and International Relations (IR) – that is, boycotts and protests over Olympic venues, human rights abuses and environmental issues – has often characterised the Olympic Games. Yet, in the last decades, the geopolitics of the Olympics has moved towards the East and different forms of contestation have emerged, becoming both a norm and a tool of contemporary Olympic Di…
Patron-client state relations and the geopolitics of authoritarian survival and breakdown
In this paper, we explain how the international relations of authoritarian regimes shape their reaction to nonviolent popular mobilisation. We identify four main strategies of authoritarian survival and argue that – from the incumbents’ perspective – repression and democratic opening are riskier than informal and formal co-optation. Thus, we ask why some nondemocratic rulers select riskier rather than safer strategies. Although recent studies hav…
The UE turn of a populist movement
Until its success at the election of 2013, the Five-star Movement had not paid a great deal of attention to foreign policy. In 2017, in preparation for the election the following year, the Movement’s MPs began collating what they considered the most relevant policy proposals in order to draft a new electoral programme. Using the Movement’s web platform, Rousseau, the M5s asked registered members to choose the three most important issues of foreig…
