How much opposition? Political fragmentation and changes in democracy
To what extent is political fragmentation associated with changes in democracy? The article uses the European integration process of ten Central and East European democracies to argue that political fragmentation is distinctly related to changes in democracy, depending on whether it is the government or opposition that is fragmented. Moreover, this association is mitigated by EU conditionality in the integration process. The paper tests the argum…
Critics of Democracy
We use the case of Albania to explore the effects of communist legacies on support for democracy and voting behavior. Using survey data, we show that those who are more critical of democracy tend to be of the older generation and reside in rural areas. These critics of democracy are also more likely to vote for Albania’s communist successor party. We argue that these trends are a result of communist legacy and continually undermine the new regime…
Minority Protection and Democratic Consolidation
The purpose of this article is to take stock of the European integration literature in reference to Eastern Europe in order to better understand how international forces affect minority rights. The article will focus on the status of the Albanian minority in the case of the Republic of Macedonia and attempt to illustrate how European integration has contributed to or hindered ethnic reconciliation between the ethnic Albanian minority and Macedoni…
EU Integration under Highly Fractionalised Party Systems
It is widely argued that the pre-accession process of the Eastern enlargement affected political competition in Central and Eastern Europe. While such claims have been substantiated in general theoretical propositions, there is a lack of theoretically informed research attempting to explain how political competition was affected throughout the region. This article utilises Lijphart’s institutional typology to better understand how pre-accession p…
European Integration, Democratic Consolidation, and Democratic Regression in CEE
The European integration of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) was supposed to bring democratic consolidation in the region. Post-accession, however, we have been witnessing democratic regression in a number of cases. Thus, an interesting question has risen as a result of this puzzling outcome. This paper attempts to provide an institutional argument for the post-accession divergent patterns of CEE by tying post-accession performance to political c…
