  • Monopoly or Competition? Unraveling the Amazon Paradox

Open Access•Stephen Maher, Scott M Aquanno et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2026

This article draws on the case of Amazon to highlight the inadequacy of theories of imperfect competition and monopoly capital to explain corporate capitalism. As it demonstrates, recent revisions to these frameworks to account for the apparently competitive behavior of Amazon and other large tech firms perpetuate a longer-term trend of compensating for theoretical shortcomings by introducing additional complexity without addressing core problems…

  • The New Finance Capital: Corporate Governance, Financial Power, and the State

    Open Access•Stephen Maher, Scott M Aquanno•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2022•Cited by: 8•References: 25

We argue that a new form of finance capital has been consolidated in the United States since the 2008 crisis-defined as a fusion of financial and industrial capital. In this regime, financiers have become more entrenched in the governance of nonfinancial corporations while, reciprocally, industrial firm managers have increasingly become financiers. Indeed, this fusion has taken place on two interconnected levels: (1) within the nonfinancial corpo…

  • Workplace restructuring and institutional change: GM Oshawa from 1994 to 2019

    Scott M Aquanno, Toba Bryant•ARTICLE•Studies in Political Economy•2021•References: 8

This paper examines the evolution of three key institutional systems—CAW/UNIFOR unions, General Motors Canada, and the Canadian federal State—and their impact on workplace relations in Oshawa over a 25-year period. It places particular focus on union policies and shows that important opportunities for workplace transition were lost as local and national leaders avoided critical economic issues and failed to seriously contend with changing objecti…

  • The Role of Transportation in Sustaining and Reintegrating Formerly Homeless Clients

Hannah Scott, Toba Bryant et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•2020•References: 3

This study analyzes spontaneous qualitative interviews with formerly homeless individuals living alone, on the importance of transportation in meeting everyday needs. Some participants identified that transportation subsidies were often haphazard, sometimes requiring tremendous effort to obtain, and discouraging use. Those who had access to transportation note the importance of access to healthcare, personal fitness needs, reduced food insecurity…

  • Institutional Power and the Risk of Finance

    Open Access•Scott M Aquanno•ARTICLE•New Political Science•2020

This article examines the nature of financial reason and the firm-level processes shaping and sustaining financial accumulation. It argues that the standard views of financial reason offered by neoclassical theory and international political economy prevent a nuanced understanding of key corporate power systems. Drawing on Hilferding’s theory of finance capital as well as his unique methodological approach, the paper shows that these accounts fai…

  • Conceptualizing Neoliberalism: Foundations for an Institutional Marxist Theory of Capitalism

    Stephen Maher, Scott M Aquanno•ARTICLE•New Political Science•2018•Cited by: 5

This article argues that the common understanding of neoliberalism as a set of state policies emerges out of the problematic characterization of power within dominant mainstream and critical paradigms. Working from critical realist social theory and Marxian state theory, it presents an alternative theoretical framework to properly account for the complex unfolding of objective history. From this Institutional Marxist perspective, neoliberalism is…

  • Contesting New Monetary Policy

    Scott M Aquanno•ARTICLE•Contributions to Political Economy•2014•References: 1

This article examines the institutional and policy transformations that have occurred within the Federal Reserve since 2008. It argues that the subprime crisis has led to important innovations in US central banking that may have profound future effects not only on the nature of US economy policy, but in terms of the distribution of social power. In doing so, the article demonstrates that the future of American politics cannot be grasped if it is …

  • The institutional dimensions of financial crisis management

    Scott M Aquanno•ARTICLE•Contemporary Politics•2014•References: 5

This paper seeks to contribute to the political economy literature on the US subprime financial crisis by concentrating on the string of major financial bailouts that occurred between September 2007 and December 2008. Part of what is missing from the extant scholarship on the financial crisis is a strong analysis of the financial bailout that contemplates the changing nature of the government's response to the crisis and anchors the intervention …
