National security, minorities, and the politics of fear: A comparative study of ‘security-driven populism’ in Israel and Turkey
Israel and Turkey have, for an extended period, been governed by right-wing populist regimes led by Netanyahu and Erdoğan, respectively. This paper argues that these regimes exhibit a distinct variant of exclusionary populism – security-driven populism (SDP) – which operates through mechanisms that make it particularly effective and resilient. Building on existing research, the study examines political developments in both countries since the 200…
Foreign aid, moral Hazard, and clientelism: Turkish assistance and the public sector in Northern Cyprus
This article examines the political economy of foreign aid in Northern Cyprus, a de facto state that has depended heavily on Turkey since 1974. Despite sustained financial assistance, governance in Northern Cyprus remains weak, marked by fiscal imbalances, clientelism, and an inflated public sector. Adopting a public choice perspective, we argue that politically motivated, continuous aid inflows from Turkey have created a moral hazard by discoura…
Price of nationalism: Evidence from cross-border shopping in Cyprus
This paper analyses the relationship between nationalism and cross-border shopping behaviour of households in a region with a history of bi-communal conflict. Traditional economic theories predict that households optimize their well-being, so patriotic feelings should be irrelevant in their consumption decisions. However, the theory of economic nationalism would predict lower cross-border activities in regions with high levels of nationalism. We …
The illusion of sovereignty in the TRNC: The AKP regime in Turkey and changing dynamics in the de facto state in Cyprus
The AKP's 'Embedded Neoliberalism' and the Rise of 'Authoritarian Embeddedness' in Turkey
By analysing the dynamics of neoliberalism through a Polanyian lens, this article illustrates the complexities and consequences of neoliberalism in the Turkish context. It examines the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey as a manifestation of 'embedded neoliberalism'. The article delves into the AKP's ascent to power, its consolidation of authority, and, most notably, its subsequent shift towards authoritarianism and interve…
Turkish foreign aid to Northern Cyprus: A mother’s blessing or curse
This paper talks about the impact of Turkish aid on the macroeconomic development of Northern Cyprus. Since the physical division of the island of Cyprus in 1974, Turkey has been sending considerable financial aid to the de-facto state in its northern part, but the impact of this aid on local economics and politics has been controversial. We show that foreign aid has not been directly relevant for economic growth of Northern Cyprus. We suggest th…
AKP’s neoliberal populism and contradictions of new social policies in Turkey
The AKP came to power in Turkey in 2002 after a devastating economic crisis and has since become a hegemonic party. Despite its neoliberal policies, its votes mostly come from the poorer echelons of the society. This article analyses the AKP as a prime example of 'neoliberal populism' and argues that the AKP's social policies are the material sources of its neoliberal populism. There are, however, important contradictions in AKP's social policies…
Political conditions for successful inflation stabilization: Comparing Brazil and Argentina
This study tries to understand how Brazil and Argentina, two countries with chronically high inflation, achieved permanent stabilization by looking at political factors necessary for stabilization. It suggests that, although state autonomy or political unity may contribute to successful price stabilization, reconciling the interests of different stakeholders and thereby building a broad political support base is more essential for stabilization t…
Is ‘Consensus’ Necessary for Inflation Stabilization? A Comparison of Israel and Turkey
By studying two Middle Eastern cases, Israel and Turkey, this study seeks to understand how countries with chronically high inflation achieve permanent stabilization. It is argued that each case of successful stabilization is facilitated by a combination of favourable political conditions. Having an acute crisis is a necessary though not a sufficient condition. It is argued that what politically seems to help most is the creation of 'social and p…
