Catherine Lloyd•CHAPTER•Discourses of Antiracism in France•2018

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book is based around four broadly historical referents and two further postwar political contexts. These themes are: discrimination, solidarity, representation and hegemony. The themes run through the chapters, connecting the different periods. The book shows how they developed through different historical periods, and how they conne…

  • The Legacy of the Dreyfus Affair

Catherine Lloyd•CHAPTER•Discourses of Antiracism in France•2018

This chapter examines how the Dreyfus Affair has informed antiracism. The Dreyfus Affair showed the connections between the debates about national identity, the state and institutions such as the army, the education system, and the church. The chapter begins with a brief overview of the tone of the centenary commemorations, and then looks at an antiracist interpretation. In order to understand what was at stake in the Dreyfus Affair, it is import…

  • Anti-colonialism and Antiracism

Catherine Lloyd•CHAPTER•Discourses of Antiracism in France•2018

This chapter examines the ways in which antiracism was changed through its encounter with anti-colonialism. It also examines the more traditional themes of economic exploitation in anti-colonial discourse, and explores how they were articulated by antiracists. • The Myths of the Antiracist Enlightenment and the French Revolution

Catherine Lloyd•CHAPTER•Discourses of Antiracism in France•2018

  • Anti-fascism and the Traditions of the Resistance

Catherine Lloyd•CHAPTER•Discourses of Antiracism in France•2018

Catherine Lloyd•BOOK•Discourses of Antiracism in France•2018•Cited by: 13

It sets out to trace the development of post-war French antiracism through the life of antiracist organizations, setting this within a broader historical, political and social context. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s there have been debates in France about the contemporary relevance of republican universalism. This article focuses on two specific areas in which these debates have been played out: first, that of the parité campaign for the representation of women in politics and, second, the campaign for the rights of migrant women or women ‘of migrant origin’. In respect of the first there has been some progress with the passing…

    Catherine Lloyd•ARTICLE•Patterns of Prejudice•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Anti-racist movements in France have been characterized by their strong political orientation and their tendency to be highly centralized. However, in the past decade the increasing salience of the position of ‘new immigrants’, a term that in France is used to include asylum-seekers, has been accompanied by a shift in the form and content of anti-racist mobilization. Support for asylum-seekers has been provided by a multiplicity of specialist nat…

    Open Access•Catherine Lloyd•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•1999•Cited by: 3•References: 7

In Muslim contexts of modernity, women's corporal visibility and citizenship rights constitute the political stakes around which the public sphere is defined. Women's visibility, women's mobility and women's voices are central in shaping the boundaries of the public sphere (Gole, 1997:61). This article examines the consequences for political organisation of Algeria's sustained and bloody conflict. Women's right to public action has been fundament…
