Does clientelism pay off abroad? Emigrant voting in Southern and Eastern Europe
In the Shadow of Global Polycrisis
The beginning of the 2020s has been marked by a near global polycrisis (Lawrence et al., 2024). In addition to the global climate crisis brewing in the background, in 2020, the first global pandemic erupted, which pressured governments to take unprecedented measures and divided societies over social distancing measures and vaccination and disrupted global production and logistics chains and caused turbulence in demand and supply. In 2022, Russia …
Towards assiminationalism? The right-wing populists’ transformative storytelling on an ethnic minority in Estonia
Are Estonians the true Finns? Homeland and residence country perspectives on support for the populist radical right
This article tackles the puzzle of why immigrant voters would support a populist radical right party (PRRP). Exploring the case of Estonian residents in Finland, it draws on 13 in‐depth interviews conducted with Estonians who voted for the Finns Party in the 2021 Finnish local elections, and survey data. The article produces a conceptual model explaining how both homeland politics and integration to residence country contribute to PRRP support. E…

Explaining support for populists among external voters
Contributing to the emerging debate on non-resident citizens’ electoral preferences, this article addresses how migratory contexts affect their propensity to vote for populists. Employing two original datasets with information of external voting results from Latin America and Southern Europe, this study suggests that while external voters are on average slightly less likely to vote for populists than domestic voters, this varies meaningfully from…
Populist Online Mobilisation Strategies in Transnational Settings

The moral rhetoric of populist radical right
While morality is considered an invariable part of populism, it has somewhat been neglected in populism scholarship. This paper aims to analyze the moral structures underlying the radical-right version of populist antagonism between 'the people' and 'the elite'. To achieve this, the paper applies the conceptual framework of moral dispositions and normative justification strategies to the case of the Sweden Democrats. The study compares the moral …
When migrants become ‘the people
The emerging debate on transnational populism has thus far mainly focused on cases, which have remained relatively inconsequential due to the weak institutionalisation of the political transnationalism arena. By bringing in a better-structured arena of migrant transnationalism, this paper introduces populist political parties mobilising transnational migrants to the debate and explores the resulting phenomenon of homeland populism. The paper inve…
Institutionalization of transnationalizing political parties
While party institutionalization research has advanced notably in the recent years, the institutionalization of political parties that extend their organizations abroad (i.e. transnationalizing parties) has remained an academically uncharted territory. This article draws on party institutionalization literature and analyses the particularities of institutionalization in transnationalizing parties. The findings suggest that transnational instituti…
When a Right-Wing Populist Party Inherits a Mass Party Organisation
When the Eesti Konservatiivne Rahvaerakond (EKRE, Estonian Conservative People’s Party) took over the defunct but extensive party organisation of the Estonian People’s Union, it placed great emphasis on rebooting and extending the organisation and bringing in new activists. As a result, EKRE has grown into a full-fledged mass party type of organisation with all the characteristics associated to it. Furthermore, it has become the fastest-growing p…
Covid-19 Crisis and Labor Migration Policy
Crises can function as catalysts for policy change, but change depends on multiple factors such as the actual content of the event, the agenda-setting power of the advocates of change, and their abilities to foster advocacy coalitions and break up policy monopolies. The COVID-19 crisis is an event that halted virtually all movement, including labor migration across the world, thus having great potential to act as a major focusing event. This arti…
It all does not matter that much in the European Union’—Migrant Transnationalism and the Transformation of Post-Communist Citizenship Discourse
Observing a case of transnational migration between Estonia and Finland, this article investigates how the experience of living in a Western democracy alters discourses of citizenship amongst people who have been socialised into the concept while living in a post-communist country. Through a discursive approach, the article demonstrates that, notwithstanding 25 years of democratic transformation, the norms of post-communist citizenship remain dif…
