  • Culture shock

    Open Access•Niklas Helwig•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The EU is in a state of culture shock. The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the European Zeitenwende placed the EU in a largely unfamiliar international environment for which its past modes of operation and behavioural patterns are unsuited. The EU was able to geopolitically repurpose its existing processes and instruments to cope rather effectively with the challenges of the war and its global fallout. However, the EU is also faced with more fund…

  • EU Strategic Autonomy after the Russian Invasion of Ukraine

    Open Access•Niklas Helwig•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2023•Cited by: 11•References: 15

Only a few concepts in the debate on the European Union's (EU's) foreign and security policy manage to evoke as many passionate reactions as the notion of strategic autonomy. For some, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, it represents a futile and ill-guided ambition of the EU to follow a third way, independent of the United States, in an emerging multipolar order – futile because the EU is missing by a long shot the military capacities to …

  • German Leadership in the Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union

    Niklas Helwig, Marco Siddi•ARTICLE•German Politics•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 4

The 2020s promise to be a challenging decade for Germany in international affairs. The model of international relations that developed after the Cold War, based on multilateral cooperation and diplomacy, is coming under further pressure. As the US relative power is in decline and other actors, especially China and Russia, are increasing their international influence, the world enters a decade of growing international competition. Unlike the US, C…

  • Germany in European Diplomacy

    Niklas Helwig•ARTICLE•German Politics•2020•Cited by: 11•References: 27

While Germany is a proponent of a strong Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the European Union (EU), Berlin has been part of a number of minilateral diplomatic initiatives in recent decades which seemingly side-lined EU diplomatic actors. This article illustrates how Germany uses minilateral formats as a means to exercise leadership in international diplomacy. The German engagement in minilateral diplomatic initiatives coincides with an…

  • Out of order? The US alliance in Germany’s foreign and security policy

    Open Access•Niklas Helwig•ARTICLE•Contemporary Politics•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 13

The Trump Presidency has caused a debate in Germany on the future of the transatlantic alliance and reinvigorated efforts to increase defence cooperation with European partners. Yet, tangible results that would suggest a decoupling from the US alliance remain scarce. This article explores the motives and debates behind Germany's alignment with the US. How does Germany's alliance with the US fit with Berlin's overall foreign policy strategy? The a…

  • Will to Fight

Ben Connable, Michael T McNerney et al.•BOOK•Will to Fight: Returning to the…•2019•Cited by: 4

This brief argues for the importance of improving our understanding of what influences will to fight, and it describes two models for doing so: one for analyzing a military unit's will to fight, and one for analyzing a nation's will to fight
